REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - The Stanford Rowing Teams completed a successful weekend at the Pac-10 Challenge sponsored by Windermere Real Estate Sunday afternoon, as the men's varsity boat took home a Sunday sweep with the varsity and second varsity 8's defeating Trinity College while the frosh defeated UCLA. On the women's side, the 10th-ranked varsity eight pulled out a victory over fifth-ranked Ohio State by just under three seconds to highlight the day.

The weekend of racing on the Redwood Shores lagoon provided a strong first weekend of the 2008 season. Coach Craig Amerkhanian praised all the coaches who chose to lead their teams into the Henley style format of two-lane racing.

'The coaches did a tremendous job of preparing, coaching and contributing to the sixth annual regatta,' said Amerkhanian. 'We are fortunate to have this quality field of Universities from across the country'.

Stanford now is headed to San Diego next weekend to defend the Copely Cup, awarded to the fastest Varsity 8 at the Crew Classic. The men are the two-time defending champions. Amerkhanian is pleased with the Cardinal men.

'We are extremely proud of our spring break work, the Pac-10 Challenge, and our upcoming season,' he said. 'These men have been diligent and dedicated throughout the training and command all of my respect'.

On the women's side of the challenge, head coach Yasmin Farooq's charges highlighted their effort with a big victory over No. 5 Ohio State. In the 2,000-meter race, the No. 10 Cardinal women's varsity eight crossed the line with a time of 6:46.79, nearly three seconds faster than the Buckeyes' time of 6:49.57.

''We invited the best teams in the country for a reason,'' said Farooq. 'Having top-level competition early in the season is incredibly valuable. I know we learned some important lessons from the weekend.''

The Stanford lightweights also put forth a strong effort Sunday, despite falling just short against top-ranked Princeton. A hard-fought race saw the Cardinal fall just short of catching the Tigers, as Stanford crossed the line with a time of 7:12.65 to Princeton's 7:10.09.

''Our race against Princeton was definitely the best race of the weekend,'' said head lightweight coach Al Acosta. 'We need to work on both ends of the race. But 2.6 seconds behind the top crew in the country is a decent showing at this point in the season.''

''Stanford University and Windermere Real Estate continue our tradition of high-level collegiate rowing at the Redwood Shores lagoon,'' said Amerkhanian. ''The Cardinal represented extremely well in all events.''
