Austin and Stanford Track & Field Meets Await Cougars This Weekend

ON THE ROAD AGAIN AS COUGAR SQUADS SPLIT TO COMPETE: The Washington State University track and field teams will compete at two different meets this weekend...a baker's dozen will compete at the 81st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, April 2-4, at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas Austin campus...decathlete Ricky Moody will start competition Wednesday and Thursday...28 more WSU competitors are headed to the Stanford Invite April 4-5 at 2007 Nike Stanford Track & Field Invitational at Cobb Track and Angell Field on the Stanford campus...results will be posted at www.wsucougars.com, after competition concludes.
ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 35th season with the Cougar track program; 14th year as a head coach, 13th year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program...he is joined by associate coach Debra Farwell, and assistant coaches Jason Drake (Head Coach Cross Country), Mark Macdonald, Ellannee Richardson and Matt McGee...former WSU All-American heptathlete Diana Pickler is a volunteer assistant coach this season along with Bob Frey and Luan Weekes.
NCAA REGIONAL QUALIFYING: The goal for the WSU competitors in the outdoor season is to reach NCAA Regional Qualifying marks...the top-five individual finishers from each regional event automatically advance to the NCAA Championships, June 11-14 in Des Moines...the only events that still have national provisional and automatic national qualifying marks are the heptathlon and decathlon, and the 10,000m races.
COUGS ON THE NATIONAL SCENE: The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has top 25 team polls posted every Wednesday on the website, http://ustfccca.com...neither WSU team is ranked in the preseason outdoor poll (March 26)..Track & Field News produced a form chart for NCAA Div. I Men's and Women's teams and a top 10 for each event...as of March 27, the Washington State men's team is ranked tied for 23 while the WSU women's team is listed as tied for 19th...individuals receiving top 10 recognition: Ebba Jungmark (1st, women's high jump), McKenzie Garberg (8th, women's discus), Jeshua Anderson (4th, men's 400m hurdles), and Matt Lamb (3rd, men's discus).

HOME MEETS ON THE CALENDAR: Washington State will host the Cougar Track & Field Invitation April 26, and the dual meet against the University of Washington May 3...both meets are at the Mooberry Track Complex.
WSU HIGHLIGHTS FROM SACRAMENTO NIKE INVITE: Cougars fared well at the Sac State Nike Invite March 29...McKenzie Garberg won the women's discus (NCAA RQ 174-3) and Moreno Zapata won the men's triple jump with a leap of 49-0 3/4 (14.95m), just 1 3/4 inches away from an NCAA RQ mark...Anna Layman, redshirt freshman, dropped her 800m time for the second consecutive week, reaching an NCAA RQ and lifetime-best time of 2:08.31 seconds for third place in the race...her time is seventh-fastest in WSU school records...she clocked in a 400m split time of 58.5 seconds...freshman Amanda Andrews debuted in the 3000m steeplechase by running a time of 11:01.98, seventh-best school all-time records.
GARBERG GRABS GREAT START: McKenzie Garberg (senior, Benton City, Wash.) opened the outdoor season at the Trojan Invite meet by throwing NCAA Regional Qualifying in the hammer (58.68m/192-6), winning the discus (52.24m/171-5), and in the shot put (14.55m / 47-9)...the following weekend, she improved her NCAA RQ mark in the discus with a winning throw and PR of 174-3 (53.11m)...this mark is fourth-best in school all-time records...Garberg was a 2007 All-American in the discus.

NO QUALIFYING MARKS NEEDED FOR PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS: The Pacific-10 Conference foregoes its own set of qualifying marks for its championship meet...a maximum of 24 women and 24 men may be entered from each school at the head coach's discretion...outdoor and indoor seasons will be used for descending order lists and seeding into the championship heats/flights...the Pac-10's performance descending order lists can be viewed online at www.directathletics.com...click on Performance Lists and under Current Seasons, click again on Pac-10 Outdoor Track & Field Performance Lists.
JUNGMARK WINS NCAA INDOOR HIGH JUMP TITLE: WSU freshman Ebba Jungmark won the women's high jump at the NCAA Indoor Championships March 14 at Fayetteville, Ark...the Onsala, Sweden, native won by clearing the bar at 6-2 1/4 (1.89m)...she received All-America honors with the win...her mark is the second-best women's high jump in WSU history...Jungmark is not expected to compete until later in the outdoor season.
