Huskies Score 4-0 Win Over Arizona

April 4, 2008

SEATTLE - The Washington women's tennis team got its first conference win of the season today, shutting out the Arizona Wildcats, 4-0, at Nordstrom Tennis Center. The match was played in tournament fashion due to an early flight for Arizona. Washington is now 10-2 in home matches.

The Huskies (11-8, 1-5 Pac-10) jumped in front by winning the doubles point. Fresmen Venise Chan and Kelsey Anonsen breezed through their No. 2 doubles match against Katie Orletsky and Jane Huh, 8-2, to get things started. Melinda Wong subbed in for an ailing Vanja Radunovic at No. 3 doubles with Aleksandra Malovic, and the two defeated Ariane Masschelein and Natalia Toporowska, 8-6, to clinch the point. The No. 1 match was abandoned with UW's Tara Simpson and Joyce Ardies leading, 7-3.

Switching over to singles play, Ardies made quick work of Huh at No. 4 singles, winning 6-2, 6-0. Simpson, in her second-to-last home match, survived a first set challenge from Toporowska before rolling 6-4, 6-0 at third singles. Simpson now leads the team with a 14-5 record in dual singles matches.

With a 3-0 lead, and three Huskies nearing wins, it became a race to see who could grab the final point. Sophomore Aleksandra Malovic reached the finish line first, defeating Claire Rietsch at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2.

The play stoppage was especially unfortunate for Chan, who was up 6-4, 5-4 on 38th-ranked Danielle Steinberg at No. 1 singles when Malovic won and the match was halted. Also one game away was Wong at sixth singles. She led Orletsky, 7-5, 5-3. In the No. 5 singles spot, Anonsen lost her first set to Masschelein, but was up 5-3 in the second when UW clinched.

This was the first win for the Huskies over the Cats since 2005, and also the first win over a Pac-10 opponent other than Oregon or Washington State since that season.

The Huskies have a great opportunity in their final home match tomorrow to boost the NCAA Tournament resume, as 12th-ranked Arizona State visits for a 12 p.m. match.
