No. 6 California Women's Tennis Edged 4-3 by No. 9 UCLA
April 4, 2008
The No. 6 California women's tennis team (13-4, 4-1 Pac-10) had its seven-match winning streak snapped by No. 9 UCLA (15-4, 4-0 Pac-10) today as the Bruins defeated the Golden Bears 4-3 at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Much like when the two teams met in Los Angeles, the team that lost the doubles point won the match by knocking off four singles players. The difference was that last time the Bears had the upper hand at the end. The match lasted more than five hours and saw three singles matches go three sets before an outcome was decided. UCLA sophomore No. 52 Andrea Remynse clinched the win for the Bruins with her comeback victory over junior No. 91 Claire Ilcinkas on the fourth court.
With the match knotted at three points each, Ilcinkas had a shot at closing out the win for the Bears with Remynse down 8-6 in the second-set tiebreaker. But Remynse fought back to gain a ten-all tie before posting the final two points of the tiebreaker session, claiming the second set by a 7-6 score. In the third, and deciding set, Ilcinkas won the first game but allowed Remynse to break her serve twice, surrendering a 5-2 lead after seven. Ilcinkas was able to break back to get within two games at 5-3 but Remynse closed things off with a 6-3 win, making her final count 3-6, 7-6(10), 6-3.
The Bears also got points from wins on the top and second courts. The first singles match to finish was No. 2 as freshman Marina Cossou logged her 24th win of the year by taking down No. 43 Tracy Lin, 6-4, 6-2. After the Bruins took wins on court three and six to tie the match at two points each, senior No. 16 Susie Babos completed her match with a 10-4 win in the third set tiebreaker. Babos dropped her first set to No. 11 Riza Zalameda by a 6-3 count but stormed back in the second to win 6-2, forcing the third set.
UCLA won court five next as Ashley Joelson defeated senior Stephanie Kusano by a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 count, also coming from behind to knot things at three a piece. In doubles play, No. 20 ranked-duo of Babos and Kusano defeated the No. 9-ranked team of Lin and Zalameda by an 8-6 score to clinch the doubles point for the Bears. On court two, junior Claire Ilcinkas and Cossou got an 8-4 win against No. 59 Elizabeth Lumpkin and Alex McGoodwin.
Prior to today's match, former long-time Cal women's tennis head coach Jan Brogan was honored by the staff of the California Intercollegiate Athletics Department for her 29 years of service to the Golden Bear program.
The Bears will remain at home to host the No. 8 USC Women of Troy tomorrow in a noon match at the Hellman Tennis Complex. USC (15-5, 3-1 Pac-10) fell in a 5-2 defeat earlier today against the No. 5 Cardinal in Stanford, Calif. Please check CalBears.com for updates and information.
