Alvarez Helps Husky Women Make Big Climb At PING/ASU Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. - Freshman Anya Alvarez turned in the best round of her young career to help the Huskies climb four spots in the standings as Washington women's golf moved into a tie for 11th after the second round of the PING/ASU Invitational at Arizona State's Karsten Golf Course, Saturday.
Alvarez shot a career-best 5-under 67 - the best round from any player in the tournament thus far - to move her into a tie for third-place on the individual leaderboard (2-under 142). The Huskies' overall score of 7-over 295 was 15 strokes better than their first-round tally and they are tied for 11th with San Jose State at 29-over 605.
Alvarez will enter Sunday's final round just five strokes behind leader Dewi Claire Schreefel of USC (7-under 137) and two strokes behind ASU's Anna Nordqvist (4-under 140). The Husky freshman began her career-best round from the 10th tee and found herself at even-par after carding a bogey on hole 16 and a double-bogey on 17, but rallied with five birdies on the front nine to finish 5-under. She is tied with Sarah Zwartynski of Texas A&M and Krystle Caithness of Georgia.
USC holds a sizeable 10-shot lead (7-under 569) over host Arizona State (4-over 580) heading into the final 18 holes. Georgia is third at 6-over 582.
UW sophomore Christina Yoon shot a second round score of 5-over 77 and is tied for 55th (9-over 153). Freshman Karinn Dickinson and sophomore Molly Aronsson are tied for 63rd (11-over 155). After carding a first-round score of 8-over 80 on Friday, Dickinson rallied with a 3-over 75 on Saturday. Aronsson also tallied a better score during the second round with a 4-over 76 following her 7-over 79 in the first round.
Freshman Nicole Ferrero rounds out the Husky lineup in 88th place (23-over 167).
