Cal Varsity 8 Reaches Copley Cup Final at San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO - California's varsity eight boat won the B heat of the Copley Cup with the second-fastest time (5:45.40) of the preliminary round on Saturday at the San Diego Crew Classic at Mission Bay to qualify for Sunday's final. Overall, the Golden Bears qualified six boats for five finals on Sunday.
Cal edged Yale (5:45.71) in its heat of the Copley Cup, but Washington's varsity eight won the A heat and claimed the top time with a 5:41.60.
The Bears posted a 6:16.30 to claim the top time in the lightweight eight (Secretary of the Navy Cup) preliminary race. They also rowed the second-fastest times in the novice eight (Derek Guelker Memorial Cup) with a 5:59.28 and in the open eight (Joan Ward Memorial Trophy). In the open eight, the Cal B boat rowed a 6:24.10 and the Cal A boat rowed a 6:24.60, the race's third-fastest time.
Cal had the third-fastest time in the junior varsity eight (Sharp Cabrillo Cup) with a 5:58.73.
The San Diego Crew Classic will continue tomorrow, Sunday, April 6, with the varsity eight grand final scheduled for 9:15 a.m. The other grand finals including Cal boats include the following: lightweight eight at 9:40 a.m., JV eight at 10:20 a.m., novice eight at 11:20 a.m. and open eight at 11:40 a.m. The results can be followed at the following Web sites: http://www.crewclassic.org/results/2008.html and http://twitter.com/crewclassic.
