The No. 31 California men's tennis team (10-9, 2-2 Pac-10) was handed its second consecutive loss in a 5-2 defeat by No. 8 USC (17-3, 4-0 Pac-10) today at the David X. Marks Tennis Stadium on the campus of the University of Southern California. The Golden Bears were barely edged for the doubles point and got wins on court four and five from freshmen Pedro Zerbini and Bozhidar Katsarov. Zerbini notched his seventh-consecutive singles victory when No. 53 Gary Sacks retired during the second set after falling 7-6 in the first.

The Trojans however, controlled its match against Cal by securing the doubles point and then getting three quick wins in singles play. USC sophomore Jason McNaughton tallied the clinching singles victory as he put away senior Ken Nakahara 6-4, 6-3 from the No. 6 position.

USC's No. 2-ranked doubles team of Robert Farah and Kaes Van't Hof tacked up a solid 8-1 win on court one over junior Geoff Chizever and Zerbini to open doubles play. Cal made things interesting with an 8-6 win by junior Eoin Heavey and sophomore Kallim Stewart over Abduallah Magdas and Sacks at No. 2 to put the doubles point decision on the court three match. There, USC's Andrew Piotrowski and Jaak Poldma gathered control and secured the doubles point with a 9-7 win over freshman Bozhidar Katsarov and Pierre Mouillon.

The Bears evened things up when Sacks retired from his singles match on court four, awarding Zerbini the win, only to see the Trojans reel off the next four singles victories. No. 7 Farah started the run with a 6-3, 6-0 win over No. 92 Stewart on the top court. Then Mouillon fell on the second court to No. 34 Van't Hof. The McNaughton win on court six came next to clinch the match. With the outcome decided, Katsarov added one more point for the Bears with his 7-6, 6-2 win over Magdas on court five.

The Bears return home for the remainder of the regular season, hosting Oregon (April 11) and Washington (April 12) next weekend at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley, Calif. Please check CalBears.com for updates and information.
