No. 23 UCLA Baseball Drops 7-4 Decision to USC

LOS ANGELES - The No. 23 UCLA baseball team fell to USC, 7-4, Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 1,309 fans at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Shortstop Brandon Crawford and center fielder Tim Murphy each led UCLA (13-12, 2-3 Pac-10) at the plate, going 2-for-4 against the visiting Trojans (15-14, 4-4 Pac-10).
USC right-hander Ryan Cook (4-2) allowed four runs and six hits in eight innings, totaling five strikeouts and two walks. Bruin right-hander Charles Brewer (3-3) surrendered four runs and six hits in four innings, absorbing his third loss of the year. Trojan right-hander Robert Stock recorded two strikeouts in the ninth inning to record his second save of the season.
USC shortstop Grant Green went 4-for-4 at the plate, belting his second homer of the year in the fourth inning. Trojan right fielder Roberto Lopez went 1-for-4 with one run and two RBI.
USC took the game's first lead, adding three runs in the fourth inning. Green's solo blast to left put the Trojans on the board. With one out, first baseman Derek Perren was safe at first base on a pop-up to shortstop Brandon Crawford, who lost his glove in a collision with third base umpire Travis Katzenmeier in an attempt to catch the ball. Ensuing RBI-singles through the right side by designated hitter Mike Roskopf and second baseman Hector Rabago handed USC a 3-0 lead.
UCLA responded in the bottom of the inning with three runs. Second baseman Alden Carrithers led off with a solo homer to right field, his second round-tripper of the spring. With one out, Crawford reached base with a single to center, moved to second base on a balk, took third on a groundout and scored on a double down the right field line by Murphy. One batter later, Murphy scored on a single through the left side and via interference with third baseman Joe De Pinto.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Trojans added three more runs to claim a 6-3 cushion. Left fielder Anthony Vasquez led off the frame with a solo home run and Green followed with a base-hit to right field. Lopez belted a home run to left, plating Green from first base.
USC scored their seventh run of the game in the top of the eighth with a solo homer by center fielder Nick Buss. UCLA cut its deficit to 7-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning, as Crawford scored from third on a wild pitch after having led off the frame with a single to right.
The Bruins and Trojans conclude their series at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Game Notes: UCLA allowed four home runs Saturday afternoon, the most by a Bruin ballclub since the season opener against Fresno State in 2006 (Feb. 3)...Alden Carrithers has hit safely in 21 of UCLA's 25 contests...Tim Murphy made his first start of the season in center field...left-hander Matt Grace pitched 1.1 scoreless innings of relief...right-hander J.D. Haver made two pitches in the ninth inning, inducing an inning-ending fly out with the bases loaded.
