No. 19 Cal Places 8th at PING/ASU Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. - No. 19 California finished in eighth place Sunday at the PING/ASU Invitational with a 54-hole score of 900 at Karsten Golf Course. The Golden Bears posted scores of 13-over 301 over the final two rounds to place two shots ahead of No. 11 Arizona.

No. 3 USC led after each round and claimed the team title with a score of 854 (-10) on the par-72, 6,2-30-yard course. No. 4 Arizona State, the host, placed second at 865 after matching the Trojans for the low score today at 285. No. 1 UCLA climbed to third place at 876, followed by Texas A&M at 879 and Georgia at 880 at the 17-team tournament.

Freshman Pia Halbig tied for 18th at 221 (+5) to lead all Cal golfers. Halbig, who has now twice paced Cal, led her team with a round of 73 Sunday. She posted bogeys on holes four and five but played bogey-free over the final 13 holes and added a birdie on the par-5, 17th hole.

Cal junior Shannon Yocum tied for 27th at 223 (+7) after shooting a 75 in the final round. Yocum also gained momentum as the day progressed, posting a score of only one-over on the back nine.

Cal junior Allison Goodman tied for 31st place at 224, firing a 74 on Sunday. Goodman tallied a plus-over on both halves of the course and sank one birdie each on the front and back nine. Sophomore Roseanne Niven tied for 61st at 231 and rounded out Cal's scoring with a 79 today.

Cal returns to action Peg Barnard Collegiate Challenge April 11-13 at Stanford Golf Course.
