Haughian, Conley Lead UW To 5-1 Win Over BYU
April 10, 2008
SEATTLE - Starting pitcher Nick Haughian struck out 14 over his eight innings and Kyle Conley hit another late tie-breaking homer to lead the Washington baseball team to a 5-1 win over Brigham Young Thursday at Husky Ballpark in the first of a three-game series.
Haughian (4-2), named a national player of the week by at least four organizations, picked up where he left off in his last outing, when he struck out 15 in a two-hit shutout of Arizona last Friday. The lefty fanned the first four batters of the game, all swinging, and notched 10 strikeouts through the first five innings.
In the end, he allowed one run on five hits, walking two for the win. BYU starter Jordan Muir (2-3), who held the Huskies scoreless until the eighth inning, suffered the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits over seven and one-third innings.
BYU (14-19) went in front with a run in the third inning as Kent Walton singled, stole second and scored on a base hit from Sean McNaughton.
Muir, in the meantime, was nearly untouchable through the first seven innings. The Huskies' only threats came in the second, when they got runners at first and second on a walk and a single, and in the sixth, when Bradley Boyer reached on a double on a high popup that was lost in the lights.
Washington (22-9) had a good chance in the seventh, but a safety squeeze bunt resulted in Brian Pearl being thrown out at the plate.
The Huskies finally broke through in the eighth. After one out, Boyer legged out a double, sliding under the tag at second base, and freshman first baseman Scott followed with a double to the left-center gap to drive him in, tying the score at 1-1. Conley, whose three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth beat Portland, 3-0, on Tuesday followed with another opposite-field homer, his sixth of the year, to give Washington its first lead.
Still in the eighth, after a Pearl walk, Ty Rasmussen hit a long home run to left, his third of the season, to increase the lead, 5-1.
The Huskies and Cougars play another 6:30 p.m. game Friday night at Husky Ballpark. Saturday's series finale has been moved up to an 11:00 a.m. starting time.
