#2 Baseball Pounce On Washington State 15-3
April 11, 2008
PULLMAN, Wash. - Powered by 16 hits and four Washington State errors, the second ranked Sun Devils beat the Cougars 15-3 in the opener of a three-game Pac-10 series at Bailey-Brayton Field in Pullman. Josh Satow went six innings, striking out four, to pick up the win on the hill. Arizona State improves to 29-3 on the year, 5-2 in Pac-10 play.
Arizona State got on the board first, pushing a run across in the first to take an early 1-0 lead. An error by the Cougar shortstop allowed Brett Wallace to score from second base.
ASU would extend their lead in the fourth, scoring nine times, eight unearned, off Washington State starter Ross Humes. Ike Davis scored on another error by the shortstop, then Raoul Torrez came home on a Ryan Sontag ground out to make it 3-0. An error by the second baseman would let Marcel Champagnie score to give the Devils a 4-0 lead. Jason Kipnis would make it 6-0 after his RBI single to left scored Mike Jones and Brett Wallace. Ike Davis brought in two more with a single up the middle that made it 8-0. Kiel Roling then sent a shot to centerfield, his fifth homer of the season, to make it 10-0.
Washington State would add one in the fourth and two in the seventh off Satow, but the run support was more than enough to get Satow his fourth win of the season. He went six plus, allowed three runs on eight hits, struck out four and walked two. Dustin Brader threw the final three innings, allowing only one hit and no runs, to pick up his first save of the year.
Brett Wallace went 4-7 in the leadoff spot, knocking in four runs and scoring twice. Jason Kipnis, Ike Davis and Raoul Torrez each added three hits, with Kipnis, Davis and Kiel Roling each knocking in two.
The Devils and Cougars will meet again on Saturday afternoon, with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. at Bailey-Brayton Field.
