The No. 36 California men's tennis team (11-9, 3-2 Pac-10) rebounded from several tough losses in Los Angeles to defeat the visiting Oregon Ducks (11-12, 0-5 Pac-10) by a 6-1 score today at the Hellman Tennis Complex. The Golden Bears won on all six singles courts for the fourth time this season but cleared the singles courts after falling in doubles for only the first time all year and for the first time in over three years since coming back from losing the doubles point to defeat TCU, 6-1 on March 11, 2005.

Freshman Bozhidar Katsarov clinched the match for the Bears with his 6-2, 7-6 win over Romeo Mortera on court five. After breezing through the first set, Katsarov was pushed the entire way in the second as Mortera forced a six-all tie and a deciding tiebreaker. Mortera carried his momentum into the breaker, gaining a 4-1 lead over Katsarov that he eventually built to a 6-4 advantage. Katsarov fought back however, tying things up at six before he ran away with the final two points to seal both his own and the team's win.

Opening with doubles play, junior Geoff Chizever and freshman Pedro Zerbini teamed up to defeat Oregon's Alexander Cornelissen and Marcos Verdasco by an 8-6 score to tie the doubles battle. On the third court, the Bears had a chance to claim the doubles point after being up 7-5 and 8-7 but serving proved to be the unraveling of the Cal advantage as the match went to a tiebreaker. There, Francisco Gallardo and Stephen Wiechert took the 10-5 win over Katsarov and senior Pierre Mouillon to wrestle the doubles point from the Bears.

Cal wasted no time regaining control of the match however, as Zerbini came off the court first in singles play when he dispatched of Geoff Embry, 6-2, 6-3 on court four. Junior Eoin Heavey finished next, one court over on three by defeating Cornelissen, 6-2, 6-4 to give the Bears a 2-1 lead in the match. The No. 92-ranked Stewart also only needed two sets to get his win on court one, beating top-Duck, Marcos Verdasco by a 6-4, 6-3 count. Katsarov's win came next on the fifth court.

With the match decided, court six and court two entered third set tiebreakers. Senior Ken Nakahara came off the courts first with a 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 win against Mike Myrhed by getting a 13-11 win in the tiebreaker. Mouillon controlled his tiebreaker with relative ease and got a 10-6 win against Gallardo on the second court to complete play for the day. Mouillon's final line was a comeback 3-6, 7-6(3), 1-0(6) victory.

The Bears will remain home to host No. 25 Washington tomorrow at the Hellman Tennis Complex in a 1 p.m. start. Please check CalBears.com for updates and information.
