April 11, 2008

PALO ALTO, CALIF. - Led by freshmen Karinn Dickinson and Anya Alvarez who sit one-two on the individual leaderboard, Washington women's golf fired a first-round score of 13-over 297 to finish the opening day of the Peg Barnard Collegiate at Stanford Golf Course in second-place, Friday.

The Huskies will enter Saturday's second and final round just two shots behind leader California. The 19th-ranked Golden Bears turned in a first-round tally of 11-over 295, with defending champion Stanford not far behind Washington in third at 16-over 300.

Dickinson is the tournament leader after 18 holes, carding a career-low even-par 71 and holding a one-stroke lead over four players including her teammate Alvarez who shot 1-over 72. Cal's Pia Halbig, Stanford's Mari Chun and San Jose State's Cristina Corpus are all tied with Alvarez in second place.

The Huskies have three players in the Top-15, as sophomore Molly Aronsson shot 4-over 75 and is tied for 14th. Sophomore Christina Yoon (tied for 33rd, 8-over 79) and freshman Nicole Ferrero (tied for 53rd, 11-over 82) round out the UW lineup.

Freshman Katie Saucier and sophomore Molly Boyle are playing as individuals, with Saucier shooting a 12-over 83 (tied for 58th) and Boyle shooting 18-over 89 (71st).

Washington will enter the final round aiming for its first tournament title since 2005 which came ironically enough at the 2005 Peg Barnard Collegiate. The Huskies also won this event in 2002 and 2000.

The final round tees off Saturday at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. The Huskies will play with California and Stanford from holes 1-4.
