April 12, 2008

STANFORD, Calif. - No. 19 California finished in a tie for fifth at 609 Saturday at the Peg Barnard Invitational at Stanford Golf Course. The Golden Bears held a two-shot lead after Friday's opening round with a team score of 295 (+11) but had an off day Saturday, tallying a 314.

Stanford defended its title with a 36-hole score of 591 (+23) after shooting a 291 (+7) on Saturday. Washington was the runner-up at 595, Oregon State was third at 598, and San Jose State was fourth at 607 in the 14-team tournament. The Bears tied UC Davis for fifth place.

Junior Allison Goodman led all Cal golfers by tying for seventh at 149 (+7). Goodman fired a plus-five 76 for the Bears' low round of the day. Goodman also shared Cal's top score at the Spartan Invitational last month.

Cal sophomore Roseanne Niven tied for 21st at 152 (+10) following a 79 (+8) today. Freshman Pia Halbig had an uncharacteristically off day, shooting an 82 to drop from a tie for third to a tie for 30th at 154 (+12). Junior Shannon Yocum also tied for 30th for the Bears, posting two rounds of 77 (+6).

Freshman Belinda Diamond, who was competing as an individual for Cal, tied for 59th at 164 (+22) and shot an 80 (+9) to better her opening-round score of 84.

Washington's Karinn Dickinson claimed the individual title by one shot, carding a score of even-par 142. Stanford's Angel King finished second at 143.

Cal takes next week off to prepare for the Pac-10 Championships April 21-23 in Palos Verdes, Calif.
