Stanford Tops Cal in Big Meet

April 12, 2008

BERKELEY - Although California fell to Stanford in the 114th Big Meet, Saturday at Edwards Stadium, the Golden Bears won 17 events, set two Big Meet records and a school record. The Cardinal men and women have defeated the Cal men and women back-to-back seasons now. The Stanford men defeated the Cal men, 96-67, while the Stanford women were victorious by the score of 87-76.

'I was so proud of the effort they gave; we fought in every event,' said Cal interim director of track and field Tony Sandoval. 'Some events could have gone either way. Stanford competed well and so did we. I'm just so proud of the kids and their effort, especially the seniors who really stepped forward with the leadership this year and really brought forth the spirit, enthusiasm and team work that was tremendous.'

Highlighting the day's action for Cal was junior Katie Morgan and senior Thomas Mack, although many Bears contributed numerous successful efforts. Morgan took top honors in the pole vault when she set the new school record that had previously been set earlier this year by teammate Allison Stokke. Morgan surpassed Stokke's mark of 13-5.25 with her score of 13-5.75. Morgan's score was also a Big Meet record.

'I'm glad that things in practice are coming together,' Morgan said. 'I'm just really excited, and I hope that I keep going. I'm happy for our team, everybody did well.'

Mack secured his own Big Meet record in the 110-meter hurdles. He tied his personal best in the event when he clocked a 13.74. Junior Jordan Paul also earned points for the Bears in that event, taking third with a time of 13.96. In the 100 meters, Mack took second with junior Kellan Patterson right behind him in third with a PR of 10.65. Mack and Patterson were also part of the 4x100-meter relay that was victorious with a time of 41.37.

The women were particularly strong in the track events, led by freshman Cherrelle Garrett and junior Kandi Bonty. Garrett was a three-time winner, claiming top honors in the 100-meter dash, the 200 meters and she ran the final leg of the first-place 4x100 relay. Garrett said a new personal best in the 100 meters with a regional-qualifying time of 11.51. The 4x100 relay, which also consisted of Bonty, sophomore Kimyon Broom and freshman Kayla Dixon, clocked a season-best, regional-qualifying time of 45.03. Bonty took first in the 400 meters, surpassing her old PR in the event by over a second. She won with a time of 54.44. Bonty also gave the Bears the lead in the 4x400 relay, a lead that Cal never gave up as it won the final women's event of the competition.

Freshman Hayley Huxtable secured a new personal best of 55.81 in the 400, as Bonty and Huxtable took first and second, respectively. Another first-place finisher for Cal was Broom in the 100-meter hurdles. Broom clocked a time of 13.65.

The Cal women garnered a lot of success in the 400-meter hurdles and the 200 meters. Garrett, who won the 200, was followed by junior Kristin Holmes, who took second with a new PR of 1:01.55. In the 400-meter hurdles, junior Evelyn Smith recorded a regional-qualifying time of 1:00.12, taking first, and was followed by freshman Natalya Beneby in second at 1:01.55.

2007 All-American Inika McPherson set a regional-qualifying mark in the high jump, as she claimed top honors with her score of 5-10.00 (1.78m).

The Cal men really flourished in the field events, winning four of them. Senior Ed Wright won the high jump, for the third consecutive year, with a mark of 7-.50 (2.15m). Junior Martin Maric and senior Craig Kent had huge afternoons for the Bears. Maric took first in the discus with his mark of 192-00 (58.52m), while Kent came in second at 172-07 (52.60m). Kent also won shot put, recording a score of 56-4.50 (17.18m). Maric followed his teammate this time with a mark of 52-8.00 (16.05m) to take third. Finally in the javelin, the Bears claimed all top-three spots. Sophomore Ryan Young won the event with a mark of 217-08 (66.35m), while Maric took second with his score of 210-04 (64.10m) and freshman Colin Kennedy finished in third at 193-08 (59.04m)

2007 All-American David Torrence made his outdoor debut, competing in the 1500. Torrence took second and posted a regional-qualifying time of 3:44.30. Torrence's fellow distance runners, sophomore Michael Coe and junior Mark Matusak got a big victory for the Bears in the 3000. Coe won the event with a time of 8:14.45, with Matusak following in third at 8:18.12.

Cal has next week off before preparing for its third and final home meet of the season. The Bears will host the Brutus Hamilton Invitational from April 25-26 in their next competition.
