USC Routs No. 15 Cal State Fullerton, 14-4

April 15, 2008

FULLERTON, Calif. - Nick Buss, Grant Green and Anthony Vasquez had four hits each Tuesday as the USC Trojans routed the No. 15 Cal State Fullerton Titans, 14-4, in a nonconference game at Goodwin Field. The Trojans recorded their eighth win in the last 10 games, thanks to an offense that produced 20 hits on the evening.

Kevin Couture (3-2) threw seven innings for USC (19-16), allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Couture has thrown seven or more innings in his last three starts, all against Top 25 opponents.

Green (Anaheim Hills/Canyon HS) continued his torrid streak at the plate, going 4-for-6 and recording his first career game with three doubles. He would later add his fifth homer of the season with a solo shot to center. Buss was 4-for-6 with a double, home run and three RBI while Vasquez was 4-for-5 with a double and two RBI.

Cal State Fullerton dropped to 20-13 overall as starter Michael Morrison (1-2) took the loss after giving up four runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Buss led off the game with his fourth homer of the season, hitting Morrison's full count pitch to left. CSF countered with a small-ball run in the bottom of the first. Josh Fellhauer's leadoff single turned into the tying run when he advanced to second on Christian Colon's sacrifice and scored on Eric Komatsu's RBI single up the middle.

With two outs in the second, Taylor Grigsby and Joe De Pinto hit back-to-back singles before Buss laced a two-run double off the fence in right for a 3-1 lead for the visiting Trojans. USC knocked out Morrison in the third with another run on Mike Roskopf's groundout to plate Derek Perren.

The Titans got two runs back in the fourth. Komatsu lined a double down the first base line and scored on Corey Jones' triple to right. Jared Clark lifted a fly ball to right field that Vasquez caught, but his throw to home bounced over Robert Stock's head as USC's lead was cut to one.

Perren singled in the fifth and Vasquez was hit by a pitch before Roskopf hammered a three-run shot to right, giving USC the 7-3 lead. In the sixth, Perren was the catalyst again for a four-run inning with an RBI sacrifice fly. Vasquez hit an RBI double and later with two runners on, Stock hit a fly ball that Komatsu misplayed for a three-base error as two runs scored and the Trojans up, 11-3.
