Golden Bears Resume Pac-10 Play vs. Bay Area Rival Stanford

QuicklyFresh off its 5-2 non-conference win over St. Mary's on Wednesday, the 21st-ranked Golden Bear softball team prepares for a Bay Area showdown with the eighth-ranked Stanford Cardinal, April 18-20. California plays at Stanford on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Saturday (1:00 p.m.) before returning to Berkeley for a Sunday game at 1:00 p.m.

Quick hitsValerie Arioto has hit a double in four straight games ... both Arioto and Bernice Masaniai have five-game hitting streaks ... Marissa Drewrey ranks seventh in the nation in wins (23) ... Drewrey also hasn't allowed a double since Apr. 11 or a home run since Mar. 28.

Olympic GoldFormer Cal Bear Vicky Galindo was named to the 15-member roster when the Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) announced on Mar. 28 its roster and three replacement players that will compete this August in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. The 15 athletes will look to defend three consecutive Olympic gold medals when they begin competition in China on Aug.12. Galindo played for Cal from 2003-05 and was a two-time All-American, a three-time all-region selection and a three-time all-conference selection. Galindo scored 141 runs at Cal - fourth-most in program history. Seeing time at second and designated player, Galindo is coming off an outstanding 2007 summer where she was second on the national team with a .500 (18-for-36) batting average and no errors in the field. Since softball's inception as an Olympic sport in 1996, a Cal player or coach has participated in each Olympiad. Michele Granger (USA), Gillian Boxx (USA) and Lisa Martinez (Puerto Rico) appeared in the 1996 Summer Olympics held in Atlanta. In the 2000 Olympiad in Sydney, Nicole DiSalvio was a pitcher for Team Italy. In the 2004 Olympics in Athens, head coach Diane Ninemire, along with Lindsay James and Chloe Kloezeman, suited up for the inaugural Greek national team, while DiSalvio returned for a second stint with Italian the national team.

The dish on StanfordStanford has registered an extra-base hit in 43 of its 45 games this season. The Cardinal has not been shut out by any team except top-ranked Arizona State. The Cardinal swept its first Pac-10 weekend in nearly two years last week. The Cardinal has never swept back-to-back three-game series' in the Pac-10. A sweep of the Bears would also match the squad's longest conference winning streak (seven games) set in 2005 when the it won the Pac-10 Championship.

NFCA RPI updateAccording to the NFCA, Cal's RPI is No. 31 through games played April 17. When determining the RPI for each team, the following basic formula is used for both the NFCA and NCAA RPI: 25% -- Winning percentage. 50% -- Opponents' winning percentage. 25% -- Opponents' opponents' winning percentage. It is critical to note that the NCAA does not endorse the NFCA's RPI. This season, Cal has faced or will face 12 opponents ranked in the RPI Top 50.

Watch listCal needs five more wins to reach 40 for the season. The Bears have won 40 or more games eight times since 1999.

Hot batsCal has 392 hits (second in the Pac-10) through 51 games this season, 19 more than last season when the Bears had 373 hits through 51 games ... Cal entered the record books in 2007 with 470 hits - tenth-best all-time ... the Bears also have five players (with a minimum of 10 plate appearances) hitting .300 or better ... freshman Valerie Arioto leads the team in batting average (.356), doubles (14), runs (42) and triples (4) ... Cal's RBI production is up from last season as well -- the Bears have accumulated 230 RBI (third in the Pac-10), one more than last year through 51 games ... Cal set a program record 278 RBI in 2007 ... the timely hitting has led to a bundle of runs as well -- Cal has crossed home plate 263 times, third most in the Pac-10 and five behind last year's pace of 268 through 51 games ... Cal had a school-record 322 runs scored in 2007.

The numbers gameCal has outscored its opponents 94-28 in the first two innings of games played this season (49-18 in the first inning and 45-10 in the second inning) ... that scoring outburst has helped Cal to 26-3 record when leading after two innings this season ... additionally, The Bears are 32-2 when leading after four innings and a perfect 21-0 when leading after six ... it also pays to score three or more runs. Cal is 31-2 when scoring three or more runs, but just 4-14 when being held to two runs or less ... the Bears are 26-2 when holding its opposition to two runs or less as well.

Multiple offendersTen Bears have had multi-hit games this season, including Valerie Arioto, who has a team-best 15 multi-hit performances ... Arioto, who currently owns a five-game hitting streak, has five three-hit games this season ... Gina Leomiti is a multiple offender, leading the team with 13 multiple RBI games this year ... three Bears have had five or more RBI in a single game this season (Sanoe Kekahuna, Bernice Masaniai and Julie Meyer).

Standing tall in the circleMarissa Drewrey, a 6-3 product from Oakdale, Calif., has compiled a 23-10 record with a 1.69 ERA (seventh in the Pac-10) and 225 strikeouts (fourth in the Pac-10), including seven 10+ strikeout performances .... her 23 wins are seventh-best in the nation ... Freshman impactTo say that Sanoe Kekahuna is playing well this season would be a severe understatement ... the freshman product of Maui, Hawaii ranks in the top 10 in several categories among the Pac-10 leaders - fifth in hits (53), third in RBI (43), tenth in slugging percentage (.600), fifth in total bases (90) and first in doubles (14) ... owns the league's longest hitting streak, which lasted 12 games from Feb. 10-Feb. 23 ... already 15 RBI away from tying the school single-season record of 58 set by Haley Woods in 2005 ... could also potentially break the single-season doubles record of 18 set by Vicky Galindo in 2004 and Candace Harper in 2002.

Rarely caught stealingSenior Erika Racklin has 23 stolen bases (second in the Pac-10) in 26 attempts this season and currently has 67 for her career (77 attempts) - second all-time in program history. Racklin isn't the only Bear not getting caught stealing. Shannon Houston is a perfect 10-for-10, Gina Leomiti is 7-for-8 and Bernice Masaniai and Katie Vickers are both 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts.

This and thatCal hasn't committed an error in two straight games, and only one in its last three ... The Bears have seven doubles in its last four games ... senior Julie Meyer entered the Cal record books on Mar. 16 after she belted two home runs against Nevada at the Capital Classic, giving her five for the season and 24 for her career - fourth all-time in program history ... Erika Racklin went a perfect 5-for-5 at the dish on Apr. 11 vs. Oregon ... Cal recorded grand slams in two straight games - Sacramento State on Mar. 11 (Shannon Houston in the bottom of the fourth inning) and Princeton on Mar. 14 (Sanoe Kekahuna in the bottom of the fourth inning) ... the grand slams were career firsts for Houston and Kekahuna ... Savannah Hensley has appeared primarily as a pinch runner, but has produced on the base pads with 12 runs in 32 games played.

900 for NinemireTwenty-first year head coach Diane Ninemire reached another milestone in her storied Cal tenure with career win No. 900, after the Bears defeated Long Beach State, 15-7 on Feb. 29. 'I'm very proud to have coached 21 years at Cal,' said Ninemire. 'The 900th win is very special and the team did it in style, putting up 15 runs against a quality opponent in Long Beach State. I'm extremely proud of my career at Cal. Every win has been sweet, but I'll remember this for a long time.' Ninemire has accumulated the second-most wins in Pac-10 history (924) and is the 11th softball coach in NCAA history to have 900 or more wins. The next winningest active coach in the Pac-10 is Stanford's John Rittman, who had 465 entering the 2008 season.
