Erdelyi Sets USC Steeplechase Record At Mt. SAC Relays

Freshman Zsofia Erdelyi set the USC school record in the women's 3000m steeplechase and redshirt sophomore Manjula Wijesekara won the men's high jump competition to lead the Trojans at the Mt. SAC Relays today (April 18) in Walnut, Calif.

Erdelyi, who was competing in her first steeplechase as a Trojan, finished first among collegiate runners and second to Carrie Strickland of the Bowerman Athletic Club with a PR and USC record time of 10:11.32. Erdelyi's time was more than three seconds faster than the old school record of 10:14.51 set by Julia Budniak in 2004. In her first season of running track for USC, the native of Hungary has cracked the Trojans' all-time top 10 in the 3000m (4th), 5000m (3rd) and the steeplechase (1st). Also running in the 3000m SC for USC was senior Laura Meyers who placed 12th among college runners with a time 11:13.64. Meyers ranks third on USC's all-time list with a time of 10:49.95 set on April 5.

Wijesekara competed in the outdoor high jump representing USC for the first time since June of 2005 at the NCAA Championships and came back strong winning the Mt. SAC high jump competition at a height of 7-3 3/4 (2.23). Wijesekara had missed the last two seasons due to an injury in 2006 and an illness in the family in 2007. The native of Sri Lanka jumped 7-4 1/2 as a freshman in 2005 which ranks third on USC's all-time list. Junior Donovan Lim placed eight with a clearance of 6-6.

Senior Kai Kelley won the 400m IH with a blazing season-best time of 50.82. Redshirt junior Sheldon Evans placed seventh with a time of 53.52, while sophomore Sean Adams placed ninth with a time of 53.52. Adams also placed sixth in his 110m HH heat with a time of 14.74, while freshman Oscar Spurlock won his heat in the 110m HH with a season-best time of 14.02.

Senior Carol Rodriguez won the women's 200m dash by more than a second with a wind-aided time of 22.84. Sophomore Judith Onyepunuka placed 11th among collegians with a time of 24.46.

Sophomore Nate Anderson won his heat in the men's 800m race with a time of 1:50.59 and placed second overall in the event.

Senior Irek Sekretarski placed fifth among college athletes in the men's 1500m race passing four runners on the back stretch to finish with a time of 3:52.75.

Redshirt juniors Brian Wilhelm placed 11th (54.04) and Mike Curiel 12th (53.76m) in the men's hammer throw competition. Both throwers are planning to compete again tomorrow at the Long Beach Invitational. Redshirt sophomore Colin Campbell placed sixth in the men's discus with a throw of 169-0 (51.54m).

Senior Chun Mei Nickles tied for sixth in the women's pole vault with a clearance of 11-9 3/4 (3.60m). Daniel Corrigan tied for seventh in the men's pole vault at 16-0 3/4 (4.90m) and Derek Scott placed ninth at the same height due to misses.

Sophomore Elizabeth Olear ran a 57.08 in the women's 400m dash to place 14th in the event, while sophomore Jason Price ran a 47.82 in the men's 400m dash to place fourth.

Sophomore Ekene Anene placed second in the women's high jump with a clearance at 5-6. Sophomore Nia Ali tied for sixth at a height of 5-2.

Philip Allen placed seventh in the men's triple jump with a wind-aided leap of 47-0 (14.36m).
