Cougars Deal Huskies 4-3 Loss
April 19, 2008
PULLMAN, Wash. - Senior Allison Rainey was victorious in her first match since early February, but the No. 34 Husky women's tennis team suffered a tough 4-3 loss to the 42nd-ranked Washington State Cougars at the Simmelink Tennis Courts today in the regular season finale for both teams.
The Huskies (12-9, 2-6 Pac-10) have been great at home but have not won a road match since the second match of the season in January. UW defeated WSU, 6-1, in Seattle little over a month ago, but the Cougars came through in today's match which counted towards the conference standings.
Washington came out and swept the doubles point for the second time against the Cougars. Sophomore Joyce Ardies and senior Tara Simpson were 8-4 winners over Ekaterina Burduli and Ekaterina Kamendova at No. 1 singles. Freshmen Kelsey Anonsen and Venise Chan posted a lopsided 8-1 victory over Bianca Selaru and Marina Nicolas at No. 2 doubles, and freshman Vanja Radunovic and sophomore Aleksandra Malovic clinched the point with an 8-3 win over Aleksandra Cekic and Aleksandra Stefanova.
Ardies gave the Huskies a 2-0 lead, as she cruised past Cekic, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. But from that point the Cougars rallied to win the top three singles matches. Burduli, ranked 52nd, avenged an earlier loss to 30th-ranked Chan, edging UW's top player, 6-1, 7-6 (3). Stefanova also used a tiebreak win for a straight-set win over Malovic at No. 2, 7-6 (8), 6-2. Simpson lost a heartbreaker at No. 3 singles to Kamendova, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.
Rainey, who has missed the majority of her senior year due to mononucleosis, got the Huskies back even on the scoreboard with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Nicolas at No. 6 singles. Despite the several month layoff, Rainey still extended her personal winning streak to six matches and she is 6-1 in dual play and back over .500 for her career at 46-45.
Washinton State's Selaru finally gave the Cougars the win on their senior day, outlasting Anonsen, 6-1, 7-5 at No. 5 singles.
The Huskies will have an anxious 10 days now as they will wait to see if they've done enough this season to earn their first NCAA berth since 2005. The bracket will be announced on April 29. In the meantime, Washington will travel to Ojai, Calif. for the Pac-10 Championships from Apr. 24-27.
