No. 24 Stanford Downs No. 29 California 5-2; Takes Third In Pac-10

STANFORD, Calif.- No. 24 Stanford picked up its first road win since Mar. 7, defeating No. 29 California 5-2 in Berkeley on Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale for both teams.

With the victory, the Cardinal (12-8, 5-2 Pac-10) locked up third place in the conference and completed a season sweep against the rival Golden Bears (12-10, 4-3 Pac-10) after notching a 5-2 victory at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium two months ago.

Stanford enters the postseason on a four-match winning streak and has won seven of its last nine overall.

California took a 1-0 lead, capturing the doubles point with wins at all three spots.

However, the Cardinal stormed back in singles and quickly took a 2-1 advantage. Alex Clayton (7-5, 6-2) and Gregory Hirshman (6-4, 6-0) locked up straight-set victories at the Nos. 1 and 5 spots, respectively, to claim the lead.

Pedro Zerbini followed with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Phil Kao at No. 4 to tie the match at 2-2.

On court six, Kevin Kaiser put Stanford ahead 3-2 with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Bozhidar Katsarov.

Blake Muller provided the clincher at the No. 3 position, outlasting Eoin Heavey 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 for a 4-2 lead.

Richard Wire tacked on a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 2 to complete the match.

Stanford travels to Ojai, Calif., next weekend for the Pac-10 Championships.
