UC Santa Barbara Finishes Sweep With 6-0 Shutout
April 20, 2008
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Chuck Huggins allowed five hits for a complete game shutout Sunday as the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos swept the USC Trojans with a 6-0 shutout. Huggins threw the Gauchos' second complete game of the series, striking out seven while walking three.
UC Santa Barbara improved to 27-11 on the season while USC fell to 19-19 overall.
Ryan Cook (4-3) sailed through the UCSB lineup the first time around, but fell into trouble in the fourth. After giving up a single and walking two to load the bases, Cook walked John DeAlba to force in the first run. The Trojans put runners at first and second to lead off the sixth, but Derek Perren's sacrifice attempt failed as Huggins was able to retire Buss at third and induced two straight fly outs to end the inning.
Patrick Rose led off the seventh with a triple off Cook and scored on Matt McColgan's sacrifice fly. An error by USC second baseman Hector Rabago on the next batter proved costly as UCSB scored three more times, capped by Eric Oliver's two-run homer to right center. The Gauchos tallied an extra run in the eighth on McColgan's second RBI of the game with a single to left.
Grant Green extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a 1-for-4 performance for the Trojans.
USC hosts San Diego State on Tuesday (April 22) at 7 p.m. with the game broadcast live via a video webcast on usctrojans.com, courtesy of TrojanTV All-Access.
