No. 23 Cal Tied for 5th after 1st Day of Pac-10 Championships

PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. - No. 23 California is tied for fifth Monday after the opening round of the Pac-10 Championships at the Palos Verdes Golf Club. The Golden Bears and No. 12 Arizona each carded a 201 (+17) on the par-71, 6060-yard course.
Top-ranked UCLA holds a one-shot lead at even-par 284, and No. 3 USC is third at 285. No. 4 Arizona State is third at 296. Six of the 10 Pac-10 teams are ranked in the top 25 according to the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.
Cal, which is looking to post its seventh straight top-five finish in the Pac-10, was led by junior Allison Goodman in the opening round. Goodman fired a score of two-over 73 to stand tied for ninth behind birdies on two par-four holes and one par five. She covered the back nine holes at even par.
Bears freshman Pia Halbig is tied for 13th at 74 (+3) and also covered the final nine holes at even par. Halbig enters tomorrow's second round with some momentum, having birdied the par-four 17th and 18th holes. Overall, she led Cal with four birdies on the day.
Junior Shannon Yocum from Cal is tied for 18th at 75 (+4). Yocum was at one-under par through the first 12 holes, including two birdies and only one bogey.
Sophomore Roseanne Niven carded a 79 (+8) for the Bears' final counting score, positioning her in a tie for 38th place. Niven tallied a birdie on the par-three 15th hole. All five of Cal's golfers recorded at least one birdie today.
UCLA's Tiffany John and Sydnee Michaels are tied for first at two-under 69. USC's Paola Moreno is third at 70.
Cal, which is paired with Arizona, will begin the second round Tuesday at 8 a.m. from the first tee.
