UCLA's Look, Stanford's Barte Named Pac-10 Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week

April 21, 2008

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA's Michael Look and STANFORD's Hilary Barte have been named Pac-10 Men's and Women's Tennis Players of the Week for April 14-20, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.

Look was the only Bruin player to win in both singles and doubles on Friday, helping the fourth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team earn the 2008 Pac-10 Championship with a 4-3 upset over No. 4 USC. With the doubles point coming down to court No. 3, Look and partner Jeremy Drean battled back from 7-3 down to eventually pull off a 9-8(2) victory, clinching the point for the Bruins. The duo is now 21-3 in dual matches this season. Look then picked up another big point in singles, upsetting 68th ranked Gary Sacks, 7-5, 6-2 at court No. 4. Look owns a 21-12 record in dual matches this season.

UCLA finishes the regular season 20-1 overall and 6-0 in Conference play as it awaits its NCAA seeding as the Conference's automatic qualifier.

Barte won both of her matches last week, improving to 25-5 overall and 20-3 in dual match play. Against UC Davis on April 15, she routed Robin Guier 6-0, 6-2. Later in the week against No. 6 California, she dispatched Marina Cossou 6-1, 6-3 in a battle of top-10 players. Barte's victory over Cossou helped Stanford earn a share of its 21st consecutive Pac-10 title. Barte has not lost a match in two months, winning 17 in a row at the No. 1 spot while dropping only three sets during that stretch. She is 14-1 against Pac-10 opponents, 17-3 against nationally-ranked foes and 17-1 in home matches.

The Stanford women finished the regular season 18-4 overall and 7-1 in Pac-10 play to capture a share of the Conference title with UCLA.

This is the first Pac-10 Player of the Week award for Look and the second for Barte. The award is the 11th for the UCLA men's team and the seventh for the Stanford women's team.

The Pac-10 Championships begin Thurs., April 24 in Ojai, Calif. as the Conference's top talent looks to secure NCAA Tournament bids.
