San Diego State Wins It Late, 6-3
April 22, 2008
LOS ANGELES - Pat Colwell's bases-loaded double broke a 2-2 tie in the ninth Tuesday as the San Diego State Aztecs beat the USC Trojans, 6-3, at Dedeaux Field. San Diego State (24-17) recorded five runs against USC's Robert Stock, who had not allowed a run this season prior to tonight.
Nate Solow (3-5) picked up the win with eight innings for the Aztecs, allowing three runs on six hits with four walks and six strikeouts. James McLaughlin picked up his second save with one inning of relief. San Diego State stranded 15 runners in the game and left the bases loaded four times.
Trojan sophomore shortstop Grant Green (Anaheim Hills/Canyon HS) tied the USC career mark for triples with his 13th three-bagger to tie Mark Smith (1989-91) and Seth Davidson (1998-2001). With his 1-for-3 performance, Green now has a career-best 14-game hitting streak which surpassed a 13-game hitting streak he recorded last season.
Green's brother, Garett, who plays for San Diego State went 3-for-5 for the Aztecs while Troy Hanzawa also had three hits with a double and triple on the night.
Green's two-run triple gave USC (19-20) a 2-0 lead in the third. Hanzawa led off the SDSU fourth with a triple and scored on Nick Romero's RBI single. The Aztecs scored the tying run in the eighth when Stock (1-1) allowed a bases-loaded walk to Brandon Decker.
Garett Green and Brandon Glover both singled in the ninth to lead off the inning. Brett Tanos then hit a short bouncer toward the third base side on a sacrifice attempt, but Stock's throw went wide off the bag. Green tried to score, but was cut down by Hector Rabago's throw for the first out. After an intentional walk loaded the bases again, Cameron Johnson hit a grounder to Stock, who retired Glover as the Trojans were unable to complete the 1-2-3 double play before Colwell produced the double to left center.
Down by four runs in the ninth, the Trojans fought back. Rabago led off with a single and Anthony Vasquez doubled off the fence in right for runners at first and second. Pinch hitter Keith Castillo struck out looking, but Joe De Pinto was hit by McLaughlin's pitch to load the bases. Salinas delivered an RBI groundout to score a run and Roberto Lopez was hit by another pitch to once again load the bases. With a 1-1 count, McLaughlin got Nick Buss to foul out with a pop up to the third base side to secure the victory.
USC travels to No. 5 Stanford for a nonconference series this weekend, Friday-Sunday (April 25-27). Friday's game starts at 6 p.m. with a 1 p.m. start on Saturday and Sunday. All three games will be broadcast live on usctrojans.com.
