No. 23 Cal Ties for 4th at Pac-10 Championships

PALOS VERDES ESTATES, Calif. - No. 23 California tied for fourth Wednesday at the Pac-10 Championships at the Palos Verdes Golf Club, marking the Golden Bears seventh straight top-five conference showing. Cal, which was sixth after two rounds, shot a 302 (+18) today to tie No. 12 Arizona with a three-day score of 908 (+56).
No. 3 USC easily won the conference title at eight-over 860, and all five of the Trojans golfers finished in the top eight. No. 1 UCLA placed second at 886, and No. 4 Arizona State took third at 891. Stanford grabbed sixth at 913, followed by Oregon (916), Washington State (932), Washington (936) and Oregon State (942).
Freshman Pia Halbig led Cal by tying for 10th at 223 (+10). Halbig and sophomore Roseanne Niven each paced the Bears with a score of two-over 73 in the final round. Halbig made par on holes 10-18 to lead Cal for the fourth time at a tournament this season.
Cal junior Shannon Yocum tied for 16th at 226 (+13) for her best-ever result at the Pac-10 Championships. Yocum posted a 77 (+6) today and was at one-under through six holes with a birdie on the par 4, third hole.
Bears junior Allison Goodman tied for 22nd at 229 (+16) after shooting a 79 (+8). Sophomore Roseanne Niven tied for 26th at 230 (+17) following her best round of the tournament. Niven was at one-under through 14 holes, courtesy of 13 pars and a birdie on the par 3, eighth hole.
Freshman Andrea Waters equaled her tournament-low round with an 83 and led the Bears with three birdies today.
USC's Paola Moreno claimed the individual title by four shots. Moreno began the day in a tie for fifth, but after shooting a four-under 67, she ended up at one-under-par 212 and won the crown by four shots over Arizona State's Anna Nordqvist.
Cal anticipates earning its ninth consecutive NCAA regional selection when the bids are announced Monday, April 28.
