Huskies Sign Australian Point Guard Romeo To NLI
April 23, 2008
SEATTLE - Australian standout point guard Nicole Romeo has signed a national letter of intent to enroll at the University of Washington and join the Husky women's basketball program for the 2008-09 season, head coach Tia Jackson announced.
The 5-6 Romeo, who hails from Adelaide, South Australia, will join the Huskies' incoming freshman class that includes guard Kristi Kingma (Mill Creek, Wash.), forward Liz Lay (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and forward Mollie Williams (Cerritos, Calif.).
'We are delighted to have Nicole Romeo join an extremely talented incoming freshman class,' Jackson said. 'I couldn't be more pleased with the type of young women they all are and the type of exciting basketball they will each bring to our Husky program. Nicole is one of the purest point guards one will ever see. She provides the floor leadership that every point guard should possess, while at the same time bringing an unbelievable three-point shot - from as far out as two-to-three feet beyond the arc.'
Romeo led her South Australian team to the 2008 Under-20 Australian National Championship gold medal after helping the same squad to the U-20 bronze medal in 2007. She was the 2007 Merv Harris Medal winner, awarded to the best women's U-21 player by the Australian Basketball Association.
Romeo competed with South Australia at the 2006 and 2005 U-18 national championships as well, earning silver and bronze medals, respectively.
'Nicole's experience against Australia's best (from former U.S. college players to professional athletes) is insurmountable,' Jackson said. 'Combine that with her tremendous ability to get to the basket and find open players, and you will find that Nicole is a great compliment to our team. We could not be happier to have her join our women's basketball program.'
Romeo played for the Norwood Basketball Club in Adelaide from 1996-2008, earning team MVP honors all but one year of her tenure. She graduated from Saint Ignatius' College (HS) in November of 2007.
