Huskies Advance in Pac-10 Invitational
April 25, 2008
Chu, from Vancouver, B.C., won his third match in two days, upsetting USC's top-seeded Abdullah Magdas when Magdas was disqualified in the third set. Chu lost the first set, 4-6, but stormed back to take the second set in a tiebreak, 7-1. At 1-1 in the third set, Magdas was sent packing for conduct violations, the exact nature of which are unknown at this time. Nevertheless, Chu will not complain, as he moves on to face Arizona State's Wes Miller in Saturday's semifinal.
Friday marked the beginning of doubles play, with two rounds scheduled for both the main and invitational draws. Kildahl and Obenaus were awarded the No. 4 seed in the Invitational. They opened with an 8-4 win over Oregon's Duncan MacDonald-Korth and Doug Mayeda. The two freshmen came back later in the day and outlasted Stanford's Phil Kao and Jeff Zeller, 9-8 (8). They will play USC's Jack Levis and Jason McNaughton tomorrow in the semis.
In the main doubles draw, junior Patrik Fischer and freshman Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan rolled through their first round match against ASU's Andrew Arango and Harry Skinner, 8-1. In the quarterfinals, they couldn't quite close out fourth-seeded Pedro Zerbini and Geoff Chizever of Cal, falling 9-7. Senior Andy Kuharszky and sophomore Derek Drabble fell in the first round, 8-3, to Arizona's No. 1 tandem.
Obenaus also had singles duty on Friday, competing against UCLA's Josh Miller in the invitational quarters, but was defeated, 6-4, 6-3. Redshirt freshman Brad Bator and Chu also competed in the doubles invitational draw but lost, 8-3, to an Oregon pair.
Play continues at Libbey Park through Sunday, with the singles and doubles semifinals taking place on Saturday.
