No. 3 USC Set To Defend 2007 Pac-10 Title

The No. 3 USC men's golf team, which has won three of its last four events, will get a chance to defend its 2007 Pac-10 title when it travels north to the 2008 Pac-10 Championships, Monday through Wednesday (April 28-30) at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Va.
California is hosting the three-day, 72-hole event on the Meadow Club's par 71, 6,686-yard course. The teams will play 36 holes beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Monday while single-round action begins at 8 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. The Pac-10 Championships, unlike most tournaments, features six-player teams with the low five scores counting toward each 18-hole round.

Within the USC-UCLA Lexus Gauntlet competition, the season-long battle between Trojans and Bruins in all sports, points for women's golf are awarded to the highest finisher between the crosstown rivals at the Pac-10 Championships. Five points are up for grabs for both women's golf. The winning school needs 57.5 points to clinch. USC currently leads 52.5-37.5.
USC'S HISTORY AT THE PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Trojans have won the Pac-10 title a conference best 18 times, including a dominating 36-stroke win in 2007. Prior to that, USC won in 2001 and 2002. Troy claimed the crown 15 times between 1962 and 1986 ... Troy boasts 20 individual champions, including Jamie Lovemark in 2007, which ended a drought that dated back to Sam Randolph's tie for first in 1983 ... USC has also earned seven Pac-10 Golfer of the Year honors, including Lovemark's 2007 distinction and Kevin Stadler's in 2002.
USC AT THE 2007 PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIPS
USC won its Pac-10 best 18th conference championship in 2007, led by freshman Jamie Lovemark's individual title, senior Joshua Wooding's third place finish and freshman Rory Hie's fourth place as the Trojans ran away from the field at the Eugene (Ore.) C.C. ... Under then-first-year coach Chris Zambri while ranked No. 5, USC put together a dominating effort in the final round, combining to fire a 16-under 344 for a 72-hole, 51-under 1389 (358-342-345-344). USC's 1389 was its lowest 72-hole total ever at the Pac-10 Championships and was just five strokes off the conference record of 1384, set by Arizona State in 2000 ... UCLA was second at 1425 (-15) and was followed by Arizona State (1433, -7), Stanford (1436, -4), Washington (1453, +13), Arizona (1457, +17), Oregon State (1458, +18), Oregon (1464, +24), California (1468, +28) and Washington State (1484, +44) ... USC's 36-stroke margin of victory was the biggest Pac-10 title victory since the Sun Devils' 37-shot win in 2000.
SO FAR THIS SEASON
The Trojans have finished in the top 4 in their last eight events (and finished eighth in the other) and have had two players finish in the top 10 seven times as well ... USC is coming off of its third win in its last four starts, a 13-stroke win at the U.S. Intercollegiate on April 20 that featured an eight-stroke win by Rory Hie ... The event before, USC won by three strokes at the U.S. Collegiate Championship on March 26, the Trojans led by Jamie Lovemark's tie for second place ... Prior to that, USC posted a fourth-place finish at the UNLV Southern Highlands Collegiate on March 9, where Hie won the individual title after a three-way playoff ... Troy had won its own USC Collegiate Invitational less than a week earlier on March 4, posting a four-stroke win. Its opening-round even 284, played during extremely windy conditions, was the low for the event and enabled Troy to hold off any challengers during the final two rounds. Freshman Tim Sluiter, who was entered in the tournament as an individual, earned medalist honors with a 5-over performance while frosh teammate Matthew Giles was second, one stroke back ... USC tied for second at the UH Hilo Invitational in the previous event and took third in the CordeValle Collegiate, the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational and the Ping/Golfweek Fall Preview ... Four different golfers have at least tied for team-high honors in USC's six tournaments this season (junior Tom Glissmeyer, Hie, Lovemark and Sluiter).
Sophomore Jamie Lovemark, a 2007 All-American first teamer and NCAA individual champion who won virtually every individual award available to an NCAA men's golfer as a freshman, again leads the Trojans in stroke average at 70.88 ... He is tied for team-high with six top 10 finishes (all in the top 7), including a tie for second at the U.S. Collegiate Championships, a second at the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate, a tie for sixth at the Ping/Golfweek Fall Preview, ties for fifth at the UH Hilo Invitational and U.S. Intercollegiate and a tie for seventh at the UNLV Southern Highlands Collegiate ... Lovemark missed USC's season-opener while representing the United States at the Walker Cup ... He has seven rounds in the 60s, including a season-best 65 at the UH Hilo Invitational ... For the second consecutive season, Lovemark is on the Watch List for the 2008 The Ben Hogan Award (he was a semifinalist last year) as well as the 2008 Nicklaus Award, which he won in 2007... Also, Lovemark was one of 11 finalists for the 2007 Sullivan Award.
Sophomore Rory Hie, All-Pac-10 second team as a freshman, is averaging 71.41 strokes per round, second on the team ... Hie has won two tournaments this spring (giving him three for his career). The first was at the UNLV Southern Highlands Collegiate (71-69-73-213), where he tied for first and won a three-man playoff with a birdie on the first hole. After a 13th at the U.S. Collegiate Championships, Hie won again, registering an eight-stroke win at the U.S. Intercollegiate (62-71-67). His first round tied the school record he set earlier in the season ... He is tied for team-high with six top 10 finishes, including his two wins, a tie for fifth at the UH Hilo Invitational, a tie for sixth at the Ping/Golfweek Fall Preview and ties for ninth at the CordeValle Collegiate and the USC Collegiate... Hie has team-high tying seven rounds in the 60s, including his first 62 this season in the second round of the UH Hilo Invitational (on a 70 par course). The previous USC record was 63 ... Hie is on 'Watch List' for the 2008 Nicklaus Award, which honors the top college player in the nation ... Hie was tabbed as the Pac-10's Player of the Month for March 2008. He won the honor in March 2007 as well.
Junior Tom Glissmeyer, a 2007 All-Pac-10 honorable mention selection, is coming off of his best finish as a Trojan, a tie for second at the U.S. Intercollegiate on April 20. He fired a 208 (66-73-69), his first round his USC best ... He is averaging 72.96 strokes per round ... He finished tied for seventh at the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate and has two other top 20 finishes. He has three rounds in the 60s.
Freshman Tim Sluiter has been a major contributor in his first season with the Trojans and boasts a stroke average of 73.00. Sluiter recorded his first collegiate victory with a 4-over 218 at the USC Collegiate, coming from behind with a final-round 1-under 70. He tied for seventh at the U.S. Intercollegiate, tied for ninth at the CordeValle Collegiate (which included a final-round 69), tied for 11th at the Fall Preview and tied for 14th at the Inverness Intercollegiate ... He fired a season-low 67 at the UH Hilo Collegiate and has three rounds in the 60s.
Freshman Matthew Giles, from Cronulla, New South Wales, Australia, is a spring semester enrollee who made his Trojan debut at the UH Hilo Collegiate. He tied for 20th and posted a 68 first round and a 67 third round ... He then took second at the USC Collegiate with a 6-over 219 and tied for 27th at the UNLV Southern Highlands Collegiate ... He has five rounds in the 60s.
