Pac-10's Come to an End for Husky Women
April 25, 2008
OJAI, Calif. - The Husky women's tennis team posted a couple victories in doubles today but at the end of the evening they were ousted from the Pac-10 Championships at the Ojai Athletic Club.
Washington had four and a half doubles teams in action today. In the main doubles draw, freshman duo Venise Chan and Kelsey Anonsen got a first round win over veteran UCLA players Elizabeth Lumpkin and Stephanie Wetmore. Chan and Anonsen won by an 8-4 margin. Later in the day, the two came back out for the quarterfinals, but were unable to make much of a dent on the second-seeds, Amanda Fink and Gabriela Niculescu of USC. The Trojan pair took an 8-2 victory.
In the Invitational Draw, senior Allison Rainey and freshman Aleksandra Krsljanin benefited from a walkover as USC's Sarah Fansler and Lyndsay Kinstler withdrew due to injury. In the quarterfinals, they made a strong effort against Cal's Rachel Dillon and Daron Moore, but bowed out, 8-6. Sophomore Aleksandra Malovic and freshman Vanja Radunovic were unable to make it past their first round match-up with Stephanie MacFarlane and Ana Olivos of Oregon, losing 8-4.
Freshman Ashley Anderson found herself with an unfamiliar friend today, as she partnered with California's Bobbie Englert as a late addition to the invitational doubles draw. The two couldn't quite find the instant chemistry, losing to third-seeded Claudia Hirt and Carmen Seremeta, 8-4.
The 35th-ranked Husky women will now look towards next Tuesday with anticipation, waiting to see if they will be selected for the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2005.
