Choo Tied For Lead After Two Rounds At Pac-10 Championships
April 28, 2008
FAIRFAX, Calif. - Washington freshman men's golfer Tze Huang Choo carded opening round scores of 4-under 67 and even-par 71 to share a four-way tie for the lead after the first day of the Pac-10 Championships hosted by California at the Meadow Club, Monday.
Choo occupies the top spot with UCLA's Kevin Chappell, Stanford's Rob Grube and Arizona's Creighton Honeck as the foursome is knotted at 4-under 138. They hold a one-shot lead over another trio of players heading into the third of four rounds on Tuesday.
Choo's opening round 67 on the par 71, 6,686-yard course was a career-best, marking the first time the freshman has broken 70 as a Husky. He opened his day on the right track with an eagle on the very first hole and proceeded to sink three birdies - all on the back nine - during his first round.
As a team, the Huskies are in ninth place at 14-over 724. Washington turned in a morning round score of 2-over 357, before falling back with a 12-over 367 in the afternoon. Stanford holds a one-shot lead (3-under 707) over host Cal (2-under 708). UCLA is in third place (1-under 709), with USC (2-over 712) and Arizona (4-over 714) rounding out the top five teams after two rounds.
Behind Choo, the next five Huskies are all within three shots of each other. Sophomore Darren Wallace is tied for 31st at 3-over 145. Wallace carded scores of 1-over 72 and 2-over 73. Senior Zach Bixler is tied for 33rd at 4-over 146. He shot back-to-back rounds of 2-over 73.
Junior John Wise is tied for 37th (5-over 147) and sophomore Nick Taylor is tied for 43rd (6-over 148). Playing with a six-man lineup in the Pac-10 Championships, freshman Kevin Spooner was one shot off a career-best with a 2-over 74 in the opening round but suffered a disqualification in the second round.
Washington will tee off the third round from the 10th tee on Tuesday at 9:12 a.m. The Huskies will be paired with Washington State. The final round will be held Wednesday.
