SEATTLE - The Washington women's golf team received a berth in the 2008 NCAA Central Regional and as the No. 16 seed will compete at the University of Texas in Austin, May 8-10, the NCAA announced Monday.
The Huskies will make their 14th NCAA Regional appearance in the last 15 years when they take part in the Central Region 54-hole competition at the University of Texas Golf Course next week.
Washington will battle for a spot in the NCAA Championships to be hosted by New Mexico, May 20-23. The top eight teams and top two individuals at each of the three regional sites will qualify for the national tournament.
UCLA is the top-seed in the Huskies' region, followed by No. 2 Purdue and No. 3 Alabama. The Bruins and Huskies are the only Pac-10 squads competing in the Central Region in Texas. Duke is the No. 1 seed in the East Region while USC is the top seed in the West.
Washington's top NCAA regional finish came as recent as 2006 when the Huskies placed third. UW finished fourth in 2004 and sixth in both 2002 and 1995. Two Huskies have won individual regional titles including Paige Mackenzie in 2006 and Dodie Mazzuca in 1997.
The Huskies are coming off a ninth-place finish at the Pac-10 Championships, which followed their best finish of the season earning runner-up honors at Stanford's Peg Barnard Collegiate (April 11-12).
