Cal Sweeps Stanford in Big Row
May 3, 2008
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - California swept Stanford in three races at the Big Row on Saturday at Redwood Shores Lagoon. The Golden Bears' second-ranked varsity eight claimed the top race with a time of 6:25.77 to the ninth-ranked Cardinal's 6:29.87.
Cal's varsity eight, which has a 6-0 record this season, won despite being down by two seats at the 500-meter mark.
'It was a good day, and Stanford gave us a great race,' Cal head coach Dave O'Neill said. 'I'm impressed with how our team was able to focus and get the job done. The varsity eight was really strong in the middle of the race, and I think they still have another gear in them. We know we'll need it for Pac-10s in two weeks.'
Cal was also victorious in the second varsity eight, 6:47.27-6:58/08, and in the varsity four, 7:39.66-7:56.78, races.
'The four was a completely new line-up,' O'Neill said. 'It's a group of sophomores who've been doing a great job everyday. It was great to see them race so well in a rivalry race like this.'
The Bears compete at Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif., in both the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships on May 17 and the Pac-10 Championships on May 18.
