No. 16 Cal Baseball Defeats UC Davis, 13-4

BERKELEY, CALIF. - The No. 16-ranked California baseball team improved to 30-15-2 on the year with a 13-4 victory over UC Davis (29-17) Tuesday afternoon at Evans Diamond. The Golden Bears were led by junior left fielder Charlie Cutler's 5-for-5 day with two doubles and an RBI; plus a three-run homer by senior second baseman Josh Satin in the third inning, a two-run homer by junior first baseman David Cooper in the seventh inning and a two-run homer by sophomore center fielder Brett Jackson in the seventh inning. The Bears finished with 13 runs on 18 hits.
The winning pitcher for Cal was freshman right-hander Kevin Miller, who improved his record to 6-0 throwing 5.0 innings of relief with three hits, two runs, one walk and two strikeouts. The losing pitcher for UC Davis was starter Trevor Fox (1-3, 3.0 innings, six hits, five runs, two walks, four strikeouts).
The Aggies had started the day's scoring in the top of the first inning when Evan Hudson hit a one-out homer to right field off of the Bears' sophomore left-hander Chris Petrini (2.0 innings, four hits, two runs). Cal came roaring back with two runs in the bottom of the first inning off of Fox when freshman left fielder Mark Canha walked, Cutler doubled, Cooper had an RBI groundout to second and Satin hit a sacrifice fly to left field. UC Davis came back to tie it, 2-2, with a run in the second on Matt Dempsey's RBI groundout to shortstop.
The Bears then starting controlling the contest when Satin hit his three-run homer in the third inning, and Cutler had an RBI single in the fourth inning, for a 6-2 lead. The Aggies got within, 6-4, with two runs in the top of the sixth on Kevin James' two run single off of Miller, but Cal continued to put up runs with Cooper and Jackson hitting two-run homers in the seventh inning. The Bears added three more insurance runs in the eighth inning on Jackson's sacrifice fly to center field, and sophomore right fielder Blake Smith's two-run double to left field.
Besides Cutler's career-high 5-for-5 day; Cooper was 3-for-4 with his Pac-10-leading 19th home run and three RBI and Satin was 1-for-3 with his 16th home run of the season and four RBI. Jackson (2-for-4, HR, three RBI), sophomore catcher Dylan Tonneson, Smith and sophomore third baseman Jeff Kobernus had two hits apiece for Cal. Jake Jefferies was 3-for-4 for the Aggies.
The Bears will next travel to Stanford for a three-game Pac-10 series against their Bay Area rival Cardinal, beginning Friday, May 9 at 6 p.m. at Sunken Diamond.
