UCLA's Kamekona, Arizona's Mowatt Named Pac-10 Player and Pitcher of the Week

UCLA'S AMANDA KAMEKONA NAMED PAC-10 SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA junior Amanda Kamekona has been named the Pac-10 Softball Player of the Week for April 29-May 5, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Kamekona, a Chino Hills, Calif. native, went 6-for-10 (.600) for the weekend, helping the Bruins to a 2-1 record that included a 5-0 victory over No. 2/1 Arizona State in which Kamekona homered twice and drove in four runs.
With the Bruins up 1-0, the junior hit a one-out home run in the third to give UCLA a two-run advantage. Kamekona added another homer in the fifth, this time a three-run shot, to make it a 5-0 game. Both home runs came off reigning Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year Katie Burkhart.
Kamekona continued her home run binge on Sunday with a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the fifth. It was one of three hits for Kamekona, who added singles in the first and seventh for her fourth three-hit game of the season.
Kamekona leads the Bruins with 11 home runs and 39 runs scored and raised her season average to .327. She is second on the team with 36 runs batted in and 14 doubles.
The Bruins close out the regular season travelling to the Oregon schools as they take on the Ducks on Thurs., May 8 and then travel to Corvallis to face the Beavers on Fri., May 9 and Sat., May 10.
This is the first Player of the Week honor for Kamekona in her career. The accolade is the 107th for the UCLA softball team.

ARIZONA'S TARYNE MOWATT NAMED PAC-10 SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - ARIZONA senior pitcher Taryne Mowatt has been named the Pac-10 Softball Pitcher of the Week for April 29-May 5, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Mowatt had an outstanding weekend as she gave up only six hits through three games. She was involved in a low-scoring pitcher's duel against UCLA's Anjelica Selden on Friday where she allowed only four hits to the No. 4 team in the country, then limited No. 23 Washington to only two total hits in two games as she shut out the Huskies by a score of 3-0 on both Saturday and Sunday.
In the first game at Washington, she struck out 15 batters and sat the Huskies down in order for every inning but one. The second game saw Mowatt's first seven-inning solo no-hitter since April 6, 2007, and her seventh overall. The senior struck out 11 and retired the side in order for all but two innings in running her record to 21-12 on the season. She finished the weekend having struck out 29 batters and allowing only a .180 opponent's batting average.
Arizona closes out the regular season hosting the Bay Area schools, first welcoming California on Thurs., May 8 before facing Stanford on Fri., May 9 and Sat., May 10.
This is Mowatt's ninth career Pitcher of the Week honor and the 110th all-time award for the Arizona softball team.
