Matt Newman Pitches #3 Baseball Past #10 Wichita State 6-1
May 7, 2008
WICHITA, Kan. - Third ranked Arizona State waited out an hour rain delay on Wednesday night in Wichita then beat the #10 Wichita State Shockers 6-1 at Eck Stadium. Matt Newman, making his first career start and only his third career pitching appearance, threw 6.2 magnificent innings, helping the Devils improve to 38-9 on the year.
Newman allowed only one run on five hits during his 6.2 innings of work, picking up his first collegiate victory in the process. Mike Leake pitched the final 2.1 innings, coming on to pitch after playing stellar defense at short and picked up his first save of the season and second of his career.
Arizona State got started early, snapping a five game streak that saw the opponent score first. The Devils jumped ahead in the first inning, scoring twice to take a 2-0 lead, a lead they would not relinquish. Mike Leake singled to left center to score Jason Kipnis, then Brett Wallace scored when the left fielder's throw was wild. Leake brought home another run in the top of the sixth, doubling home Petey Paramore to put ASU up 3-0.
The Shockers got to Newman in the sixth, pushing a run across to cut the lead to 3-1. Leake came on to pitch in the seventh with runners at the corners and two outs. After throwing a strike to the hitter, he promptly picked the runner off first to end the threat.
A Petey Paramore sac fly in the eighth scored Kipnis to make it 4-1, then Greg Bordes added some insurance in the ninth, singling to center to score pinch runner Jake Elmore from second to make it 5-1. With runners at the corners and one out, Ryan Sontag laid down a perfect bunt to push the lead to 6-1. Leake would slam the door in the ninth to secure the victory.
Newman was the star, working out of several jams by inducing ground balls and pop ups. He walked two and struck out two in his third appearance of the year. His first appearance came at home against Wofford, while his second was two weeks ago at #15 Cal State Fullerton.
The Sun Devils now return home to complete the non-conference portion of their schedule. They host Loyola Marymount in a three-game set that starts Saturday night at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
