Arizona Tames Golden Bears, 2-0
May 8, 2008
Tucson, Ariz. - The eleventh-ranked Arizona Wildcats scored a run in the first inning and a run in the second inning, while holding No. 23 California to just two hits, en route to a 2-0 win on Thursday night in Pac-10 softball action at Hillenbrand Stadium.
The loss drops the Bears to 40-22 on the year and 7-12 in the Pac-10. Cal closes out its final two games of the 2008 campaign at No. 2 Arizona State tomorrow (7:00 p.m.) and Saturday (12:00 p.m.).
Arizona's ace pitcher Taryne Mowatt held the Cal offense in check the entire contest, allowing two hits (five walks) with 13 strikeouts for her 22nd win in the circle.
The Wildcats pushed a run across the board in the first inning courtesy of a Laine Roth two-out single to right field to plate Brittany Lastrapes. Sam Banister then hit a leadoff home run the following inning to give Arizona the 2-0 advantage.
Cal had its best scoring opportunity in the top of the fifth inning with Valerie Arioto and Taylor Kelly on first and second with one out. However, Mowatt recorded a strikeout and induced a pop fly to neutralize the scoring threat and end the stanza.
Cal starting pitcher Marissa Drewrey lasted three innings, allowing both runs to suffer the loss. Brittany LaRosa and Arioto also logged a combined three innings of work in the circle. Arioto recorded five strikeouts (eight batters faced) in two innings.
Erika Racklin stole her 27th base of the year in the top of the fourth inning. She is one stolen base shy of tying Keri Kropke's program best 28 set in 1992.
