Huskies Complete First Round At NCAA Central Regional

May 8, 2008

AUSTIN, Texas - Sophomore Molly Aronsson and freshman Karinn Dickinson each fired opening round scores of 3-over 75 to lead the Washington women's golf team during the first day of the NCAA Central Regional Championship hosted by Texas at the UT Golf Club in Austin, Thursday.

The Huskies, making their 15th NCAA regional appearance in the last 16 years, carded a first-round score of 24-over 312 to end the day in 18th place among 21 teams. Top-seeded UCLA sits atop the team leaderboard after a first-round tally of 5-under 283. The Bruins have a two-shot lead over TCU (3-under 285). Purdue sits in third place at even-par 288.

Aronsson and Dickinson are both tied for 39th on the individual leaderboard as the two Husky teammates each sank four birdies during their opening rounds of 3-over 75. Aronsson was at even-par going into her final hole (the ninth) before ending up with a triple-bogey to finish the round.

Rounding out the Husky lineup were freshman Nicole Ferrero and sophomore Christina Yoon at 9-over 81 (tied for 87th). Freshman Anya Alvarez, who played in the No. 1 spot in the lineup and led the team in stroke average going into the tournament, shot an 11-over 83 (tied for 97th). All five Huskies were making their NCAA regional debuts.

'Karinn and Molly played pretty solid but no one else could really get it going,' UW head coach Mary Lou Mulflur said following the round. 'It was the first time any of them had ever hit a shot in postseason. Obviously they were nervous, but that means they were excited which is good. I felt like we were prepared, we had a good practice round yesterday. We're just young. It's not an excuse, but it is what it is and I'm very pleased with their effort. Their spirits are good so we'll just get back out there tomorrow and see how it goes.'

UCLA's Maria Joe Uribe shot a 7-under 65 to lead the individual field. One stroke behind her is Purdue's Maria Hernandez who sank a hole-in-one on the par-three second hole. TCU's Valentine Derrey is in third place a 5-under 67,

The Central Regional Championship continues with the second round set to tee off on Friday. Washington will tee off from the first hole at 8 a.m. CT and will be paired with Nebraska and Harvard. The final round will take place on Saturday. The top-eight teams and top-two individuals advance to compete in the NCAA Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., May 20-23.
