No. 22 Cal in a Tie for 6th After 1st Round of NCAA West Regional
May 8, 2008
LINCOLN, Calif. - No. 22 California is in a tie for sixth place Thursday at the NCAA West Regional after carding an opening-round score of seven-over 295 at the Lincoln Hills Golf Club. The Golden Bears are tied with BYU, Stanford and Michigan State.
'We're not looking ahead too much,' said Cal head coach Nancy McDaniel. 'We're trying to stay focused on what we have to do against the golf course. We have a late tee time. We have about 24 hours to get focused and go out there again. We left a few birdies out there. Tomorrow with a good rest we can go back out there and get focused on some of the easier holes.'
No. 1 USC leads the 21-team field at five-under 283. No. 34 Tulsa is second at 287, and No. 45 UNLV is third at 288. No. 9 Arkansas (291) and No. 7 Oklahoma State (293) round out the top-five teams.
The top eight teams after three days of competition advance to the NCAA Championships. The Bears are making their ninth straight appearance in an NCAA regional.
Junior Allison Goodman leads Cal in a tie for ninth at one-under 71. Goodman scattered four birdies throughout the round. She got off to a strong start, sitting at one-under through nine holes (eight pars, one birdie). All Cal golfers began the round from the 12th tee.
Cal junior Shannon Yocum and freshman Pia Halbig are tied for 25th at 73. Each golfer posted two birdies and gained momentum at the end of the round. Halbig made par on holes one through seven, birdied the par 5, eighth hole and had a bogey on hole nine (par 4). Yocum birdied hole eight and had her lone bogey on the front nine on the par 4, sixth hole.
Freshman Andrea Waters accounted for Cal's final counting score, shooting a 78 (+6) - a career best - to stand in a tie for 73rd place.
'We were led by Allie Goodman with an under-par round of 71,' said McDaniel. 'Any score under par on any course is a great round. We'll take that one. Pia and Shannon were right there behind Allie giving her a lot of support. We got a counting score from Andrea, which was a great breakthrough. We're hoping she can build on that.'
The Trojans' Paola Moreno and Arizona's Alison Walshe lead the individual race at four-under 68. Four golfers are a shot back at 69.
Cal tees off the second round Friday at 1:20 p.m. from the first tee.
