No. 22 Cal Tied for 9th after 2nd Round of NCAA West Regional

LINCOLN, Calif. - No. 22 California is in a three-way tie for ninth place Friday after the second round of the NCAA West Regional at Lincoln Hills Golf Club. The Golden Bears fired a score of 301 (+13) in the second round to put them in a tie with UC Davis at 596 (+20).

No. 1 USC sits atop the leader board at five-under 571. No. 45 UNLV is second at 578, and No. 5 Arizona State is third at 581 in the 21-team tournament. The top eight teams after tomorrow's final round will advance to the NCAA Championships May 21-24 in Albuquerque, N.M.

The Bears don't have far to climb to secure one of the NCAA spots. Stanford is seventh at 593, and Tulsa is eighth at 595.

Junior Allison Goodman leads Cal in a tie for 13th at 146 (+2) after carding a 75 Friday. Goodman was at one-under par through 12 holes, behind two birdies and only one bogey. After struggling from holes 13-16, she recovered to birdie the par 5, 17th hole and posted a par on the 18th hole.

Junior Shannon Yocum and freshman Pia Halbig are tied for 36th for the Bears at 149 (+5). Both athletes posted rounds of 73 and 76 the last two days. The duo was more consistent on the back nine today, with Halbig covering the final nine holes at one-over par, and Yocum finished the final 14 holes at one-over.

Sophomore Roseanne Niven registered the best round of the day for Cal, shooting a 74 (+2) to easily surpass her score of 82 in the opening round. Niven is tied for 84th at 156.

UNLV's Therese Koelbaek leads the individual competition at five-under 137. Arizona State's Azahara Munoz is second at 140.

Cal tees off the final round Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from the 12th tee.
