Arizona State Downs Cal, 5-2 in Regular Season Finale

Tempe, Ariz. - The second-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils built an early 3-0 lead and never relinquished their advantage en route to a 5-2 victory over the 23rd-ranked California Golden Bears in the regular season finale on Saturday at Farrington Stadium.
The Bears conclude the regular season at 40-24 overall and 7-14 in Pac-10 play. Cal will wait to see if it receives a 23rd straight bid to the NCAA postseason when the selections are announced on Sunday, May 11 at 7:00 p.m. (PT) on ESPNU.
ESPNU will be televising the 2008 NCAA Division I Softball Selection Show at 7 p.m. PT (30-minute show) after the conclusion of the NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse First Round Game. Kristen Miller's second inning solo home run off of Marissa Drewrey helped ASU lay claim an early 1-0 lead. Later in the frame, Rhiannon Baca and Jackie Vasquez delivered RBI doubles to up Arizona State's lead to 3-0.
Cal then made things interesting in the top of the fourth inning with a two-out rally. Gina Leomiti, who singled to right field on a 3-2 count to start the rally, advanced to second after Bernice Masaniai reached on an infield error. Katie Vickers then punched a single through the left side to load the bases, before Sanoe Kekahuna connected for an infield base knock to score Leomiti.
The Bears once again used another two-out rally in the top of the fifth to trim the ASU lead to 3-2. Taylor Kelly drew a walk, before Valerie Arioto's single through the left side advanced Kelly to second. After ASU pitcher Katie Burkhart recorded a strikeout, Leomiti delivered once again - this time with an infield single to plate Kelly.
That was as close as Cal got, as Mindy Cowles connected for a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth to put the Sun Devils up 5-2.
Arioto, who relieved Drewrey in the sixth, extended her scoreless streak to 12.2 innings.
