Cal State Northridge Takes 5-4 Decision Over USC
May 10, 2008
LOS ANGELES - Ryan Pineda's two-run bases-loaded single in the eighth provided the eventual winning runs Saturday as the Cal State Northridge Matadors defeated the USC Trojans, 5-4, at Dedeaux Field. Edwin Quirarte (3-3) held off a Trojan rally in the ninth, getting Grant Green to ground out with runners at first and second to secure the victory.
Quirarte allowed only one run on three hits in 2 1/3 innings. Matador starter Phil Hann threw six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
Cal State Northridge improved to 22-25 overall while USC fell to 22-26 on the season.
Sophomore left fielder Keith Castillo (Huntington Beach/Mater Dei HS) went 3-for-4 for the Trojans. Tommy Milone took the loss, going 7 1/3 innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits with no walks and eight strikeouts.
Castillo doubled into the gap in the second for the Trojans and, before time was called, stole third base. The next batter, Mike Roskopf, then drove Castillo in with an RBI groundout as USC scored the first run of the game.
The Matadors tied the game in the fourth when John Parham led off with a single to right. USC right fielder Anthony Vasquez bobbled the ball which allowed Parham to advance to second. Richard Cates then hit a bloop double down the left field line to plate Parham.
Matt Warr led off the top of the fifth with a triple off the fence in left and scored the go-ahead run when Jason Dobbs hit a slow roller that third baseman Roberto Lopez booted. Jeff Pruitt put Dobbs on second after a bunt and TS Reed singled to left as CSUN led, 3-1.
In the Trojan sixth, Nick Buss singled and stole second. Grant Green then singled to right while Buss was cut down at the plate on a throw by Parham from right field. Castillo made it a 3-2 Northridge lead after flaring an RBI double to left. Lopez hit an RBI double in the seventh to tie the game at three apiece before the Matadors scored twice in the eighth.
CSUN used three consecutive singles to knock out Milone. Brad Boxberger entered the game before relinquishing the two-run single to center by Pineda. Lopez hit a two-out single in the ninth and Buss walked to put the tying run at second, but Green then grounded out to second.
