SEATTLE - Lefty Jayson Miller came one out short of throwing a complete-game shutout but nonethleless led Washington State to a 5-1 win over the Washington baseball team Saturday at Husky Ballpark as the Cougars evened the Apple Cup series at one win apiece.
The Huskies (30-17 overall and 9-8 in the Pac-10) had a five-game winning streak broken and dropped into fourth in the conference standings with the loss. Washington State improved to 27-21 overall and 6-11 in league play.
UW starting pitcher Cam Nobles (4-4) suffered the loss. The right-hander from Mill Creek went only four and two-thirds, allowing three runs on seven hits.
Miller, a senior from Richland, improved to 7-1 on the season with the second complete game of his career. He didn't allow a Husky to reach third base until the bottom of the ninth and finished with nine strikeouts.
WSU opened the scoring with three in the third. After a sacrifice fly from third baseman Paul Gran drove in one, first baseman Jim Murphy hit a towering, two-run homer to left to stake the visitors with a 3-0 lead. The homer was Murphy's 13th of the season.
In the seventh, Murphy, a senior from Kirkland's Juanita High, came through again. After Scott Suttmeier reached on his third single of the day and took second on a throwing error, Murphy doubled off the left-center field fence, increasing the Cougar lead to 4-0.
The Cougars tacked on a fifth tally in the eighth. Michael Weber led off with a single, his third hit of the game, moved to second on a bunt and to third on a groundout before scoring on a bloop single from Travis Coulter.
Meehan finished 3-for-4 with three singles while third baseman Jarett Jackson was 2-for-4.
The Huskies and Cougars close out the series Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game, which will air live on KKNW AM-1150. Husky left-hander Nick Haughian is slated to face off with Cougar right-hander Chad Arnold.
