Huskies Finish 17th At NCAA Central Regional

May 10, 2008

AUSTIN, Texas - Washington women's golf shot a final-round score of 22-over 310 to finish 17th at the NCAA Central Regional Championships hosted by Texas at the UT Golf Club in Austin, Texas, Saturday.

The Huskies, who duplicated their second-round score during the final day of the event, finished the three-day tournament at 68-over 932. Washington did move up one spot in the standings after opening the round in 18th place. Sophomore Molly Aronsson led a young UW team with a final round score of 4-over 76 and ended up tied for 38th on the individual leaderboard at 11-over 227.

Teeing off from the 10th hole for its final round, UW played a solid back nine but was unable to continue that momentum on the front nine. The Huskies had two players under par and two players one-over par after the first nine holes.

Sophomore Christina Yoon was one of those players who started out on fire, making the turn at 2-under par before ending up with a final round score of 5-over 77. She finished tied for 77th (22-over 238). Freshman Karinn Dickinson finished behind Aronsson on the leaderboard tying for 55th (15-over 231). Freshman Anya Alvarez, who fired a final-round 5-over 77, tied for 91st (26-over 242) and freshman Nicole Ferrero tied for 98th (31-over 247). All five Huskies were making their first-ever postseason appearances.

'We actually played the first nine holes really well,' UW head coach Mary Mulflur said after the Huskies' season came to a close. 'We just ran out of gas after making the turn. If you look at our first nine and our second nine it was just a huge difference. But we were able to get some good experience this week and it's something we can really build on for next year.'

The top eight teams earned a spot in the NCAA Championships to be hosted by New Mexico, May 20-23. UCLA won the Central Regional title as the only team to finish under par at 3-under 861. Also qualifying for nationals were Purdue, Denver, TCU, Texas A&M, Alabama, host Texas and LSU. LSU ended in a tie for eighth with Florida State but the Lady Tigers earned the bid to nationals by winning a sudden-death playoff. North Carolina State's Lauren Doughtie and Florida State's Carolina Westrup, who tied for fifth, earned the two individual bids to nationals.

Purdue's Maria Hernandez and UCLA's Maria Jose Uribe shared regional medalist honors, finishing the tournament at 8-under 208.
