No. 22 Cal Places 12th at NCAA West Regional

LINCOLN, Calif. - No. 22 California's season came to an end with a 12th-place finish Saturday at the NCAA West Regional at the Lincoln Hills Golf Club. The Golden Bears, which started today's round on the 12th tee, finished the 54-hole tournament at 897 (+33) after shooting rounds of 295, 301 and 301.

No. 1 USC, which had four of its golfers place in the top nine, won the 21-team tournament with a score of 855 (-9). No. 5 Arizona State took second at 870, and UNLV placed third at 879. The other five NCAA West Regional teams to qualify for the NCAA Championships May 21-24 were Arizona (880), Oklahoma State (882), Arkansas (882), Tulsa (884) and UC Davis (892). The Aggies finished regulation tied with Ohio State and Stanford at 892 but defeated both teams in a playoff to earn their first-ever trip to the NCAA Championships.

Angela King of Stanford (T11th) and Erica Moston of San Jose State (T13th) advance to NCAAs as the top two individuals on non-advancing teams.

Junior Allison Goodman led Cal for the third time this season, tying for 17th at 220 (+4) after shooting a 74 Saturday. She was the next golfer in line to earn a spot at the NCAA Championships as an individual. Goodman, who had three birdies, was at even-par on the back nine. Freshman Pia Halbig also shot a 74 for the Bears to tie for 35th (223, +7). Halbig covered the front nine at one-under on the strength of three birdies. Cal junior Shannon Yocum, who fired a 76 in the final round, tied for 44th at 225 (+9). Yocum excelled on the front nine, as well, posting a combined score of one-over on those holes.

Sophomore Roseanne Niven and freshman Andrea Waters each posted scores of 77 in the final round for the Bears. Niven finished in 85th place at 233, (+17) and Waters finished in a tie for 95th at 239 (+23) following her career-best round today.

UNLV's Therese Koelbaek and Arizona's Alison Walsh shared top honors at six-under 210.

Cal, which competed in its ninth straight NCAA regional, returns all seven golfers from this year's team in 2008-09.
