USC Wins 13-10 Slugfest At UC Riverside
May 14, 2008
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Sophomore Robert Stock (Westlake Village/Agoura HS) recorded his first career three-double game while junior Anthony Vasquez (San Antonio, Texas/Texas A&M) went 2-for-5 at the plate and threw the final 3 2/3 innings in relief to get the win as the USC Trojans beat the UC Riverside Highlanders, 13-10.
The Trojans banged out 21 hits, including seven doubles, to improve to 24-26 on the season while the Highlanders fell to 19-28.
Vasquez (2-1) allowed just one run on two hits for the Trojans. Grant Green went 3-for-5, bumping his season average to .398 while Roberto Lopez was 4-for-6 with a double and two RBI. Nick Buss was 2-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBI.
Drew Garcia was 3-for-5 with three RBI for the Highlanders, staying in the game after taking a ground ball on a bad hop that bloodied his nose.
It didn't take long for the Trojans to take the lead, thanks for a four-run first inning. With two outs and Lopez at second, Derek Perren belted an RBI double to right, followed by an RBI single from Keith Castillo and single by Vasquez. Mike Roskopf walked to load the bases before Hector Rabago flared a two-run double to right field to cap the scoring.
Buss led off the second with a line drive homer to right for his fifth of the season. Castillo brought home Green from third on a sacrifice fly as the Trojans took the 6-0 lead.
After Couture retired the first seven batters he faced, UC Riverside got to him in the third. Justin Shultz led off with a single and moved to third on a single from Trevor Hairgrove. Carl Uhl was hit on a 2-2 pitch to load the bases and Joey Gonzales gave the Highlanders their first run of the game with a base hit that bounced off Couture's leg. Garcia then cut the deficit to three with a two-run single to center. UC Riverside scored a run in the fourth to make it 6-4, but USC scored three times in the fifth. After Castillo, Roskopf and Rabago hit consecutive singles to load the bases, Stock hit a two-run double to right and Buss brought home Roskopf with an RBI sacrifice fly for the 9-4 advantage.
Aaron Wible and Ryan Goetz knocked USC starter Kevin Couture out of the game with back-to-back RBI singles in the fifth with USC leading, 9-6. Ryan Cabral relieved Couture and allowed a sacrifice fly for a 9-7 score as Couture was charged with seven runs in 4 1/3 innings.
With an out in the sixth, Uhl doubled down the left field line and Gonzales put runners at the corners with a single. Garcia blooped an RBI single to left and Wible walked to load the bases. Vasquez came in from right to pitch and induced a ground ball from Goetz, but the Trojans were unable to turn the inning-ending double play as Gonzales scored to make it a 9-9 tie.
Freshman Vinnie St. John, who replaced Vasquez in right field, hit an innocent ground ball to short that Hairgrove booted for the first error of the game. Stock then delivered another double over the head of Gonzales for the go-ahead run. Buss was then hit by a pitch from Stephen Penney and Lopez followed with a two-run double to the gap in left center as the Trojans went up by three, 12-9.
The Highlanders attempted another rally in the seventh as Uhl hit an RBI single, but Vasquez retired Gonzales and Garcia to keep the two-run lead for the Trojans at 12-10. USC added the insurance run in the ninth on back-to-back doubles by Stock and Buss as Vasquez retired the side in order in the ninth for the win.
