BREMERTON, Wash. - Four Pac-10 teams sit atop the team leaderboard after the first round of the NCAA Div. I Men's Golf West Regional held at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash., Thursday. Oregon (1-over 289) holds a two-shot lead over No. 1 seed USC, No. 2 seed UCLA and the host Huskies (3-over 291) who finished the day in a three-way tie for second.

Rounding out the top-10 teams after 18 holes were Pepperdine (4-over 292), Saint Mary's (6-over 294), Clemson (7-over 295), North Carolina (7-over 295), Stanford (8-over 296) and Texas (11-over 299). In all, 27 teams are vying for 10 spots to advance to the NCAA Championships hosted by Purdue, May 28-31. The NCAA West Regional continues on Gold Mountain's par 72, 7,111-yard Olympic Course Friday and Saturday. Admission is free. Live scoring is available on GolfStat.com and GoHuskies.com.

The Ducks were led by Joey Benedetti who fired the low round of the day with a 3-under 69. His one-shot lead over the field is being challenged by Pepperdine's Eric Shriver (2-under 70) and five more players tied for third place including Washington sophomore Nick Taylor and 2008 Pac-10 Golfer of the Year Kevin Chappell from UCLA (1-under 71).

The Huskies ended the opening day of the tournament with two players in the top-10. In addition to Taylor, sophomore Darren Wallace is tied for eighth after carding an even-par 72. Rounding out the Husky lineup were freshman Tze Huang Choo and Zach Bixler who both fired scores of 2-over 74 (tied for 31st), and junior John Wise who shot 6-over 78 (tied for 99th).

'In my mind last night I was thinking two to four-under would be a pretty solid score for us today,' UW head coach Matt Thurmond said following the Huskies' morning round. 'I didn't expect to see the wind and the wind blew probably five or six shots, so we're about where I was hoping to be.'

Eighteen individuals played the course at par or better. Among those players in a log jam for eighth place at even-par include defending NCAA medalist Jamie Lovemark (USC) and 2007 NCAA runner-up Kyle Stanley (a Gig Harbor, Wash., native from Clemson).

The tournament continues on Friday with second round action beginning at 7 a.m. PT from both the first and 10th tees. The 21st-seeded Huskies will play their second round from the first tee at 12:12 p.m. with No. 19 Kentucky and No. 20 Wisconsin. Friday's team pairings are determined by seed, with Saturday's pairings based on team standings after 36 holes. The top teams will tee off in the morning wave on the final day.
