#3 Baseball Wins Opener With Washington 13-3
May 16, 2008
TEMPE, Ariz. - Thanks to an offensive explosion in the first three innings, #3 Arizona State beat Washington 13-3 in front of 3,187 at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark. Staked a 10 run lead, starter Mike Leake threw eight strong innings to pick up his ninth win of the year. With the victory, ASU improves to 42-9, 13-6 in Pac-10 play.
Leake (9-1) allowed only five hits and one run over his eight innings, striking out four. Reyes Dorado pitched the ninth, allowing two runs.
Washington starter Jorden Merry was the Pac-10's ERA leader entering the game, but Petey Paramore put the Devils up 1-0 in the first, blooping a single to left that scored Jason Kipnis from second. Kiel Roling made it 4-0 with a three-run double down the right field line.
Jason Kipnis added another run in the second, doubling to right field to score Greg Bordes. A Brett Wallace sac fly made it 6-0. It would reach 7-0 on a Roling RBI single, then a Ryan Sontag single brought home two more. A Marcel Champagnie sac fly would put ASU up 10-0 before Washington would score one off Leake in the seventh. The Devils got that run back on a Petey Paramore three-run shot, his seventh of the year.
Nine different Sun Devils recorded hits, led by Kiel Roling who was 4-5 with four RBI. Ryan Sontag, Jason Kipnis and Petey Paramore each had three hits, while Ike Davis and Marcel Champagnie each chipped in two. It was the first action for Davis since April 25.
The Devils and Huskies will face off again tomorrow evening. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. from Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
