Guard Jorge Gutierrez Signs with Golden Bears
May 16, 2008
BERKELEY - Jorge Gutierrez, a 6-3, 200-pound guard out of Findlay College Prep in Henderson, Nev., has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of California in the fall, Golden Bear men's basketball coach Mike Montgomery announced Friday.
'We are delighted that Jorge was available this late,' Montgomery said. 'We really had a need at that position. I checked around, and he was very highly thought of and received great recommendations from people I trust. He understands the game well and is a hard worker.'
Gutierrez, a native of Chihuahua, Mexico, averaged 13.4 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 2.7 spg and 2.6 apg for Findlay last season as part of a team that finished 32-1. Its only loss was a 75-73 decision to Hargrave Military Academy in the final of the National Prep Championship tournament in New York. Earlier in the season, Gutierrez was named MVP at the National Prep School Invitational in Rhode Island when he poured in 17.5 ppg, shot 83.4 percent from the floor (15-for-18) and defended four different positions. Previous winners of the award include Michael Beasley (2007), an All-American at Kansas State last year, and Dorell Wright (2004), now with the NBA's Miami Heat.
Prior to attending Findlay, Gutierrez played at Lincoln High School in Denver, Colo., for two seasons. In 2006-07, he averaged 20.3 ppg and 3.7 rpg, shooting 61.4 percent from the floor (153-249), 61.5 percent from three-point range (16-26) and 74.9 percent from the free throw line (134-179). A year earlier, Gutierrez led the Lancers to the Colorado state championship and earned tournament MVP honors. He contributed 22.5 ppg and 6.0 rpg on 58.8 percent field goal shooting (163-277) over the course of the campaign.
Gutierrez is the first recruit signed by Montgomery since he became Cal's head coach on April 5, and he joins guard D.J. Seeley of Modesto Christian HS, who signed in November, as the Bears' incoming freshman class.
