Cal Men's Golf Ends Season At NCAA Regionals

BREMERTON, Wash. - The California men's golf team wrapped up its 2007-08 campaign with a 20th place finish at the NCAA West Regional Championship on Saturday at Gold Mountain Golf Club. The top 10 teams in the event advance to the NCAA National Championships. This season marked Cal's 10th NCAA appearance in the last 12 years as well as the 13th overall regional appearance for the Golden Bears.

The Pac-10 had a very impressive performance in the regional as six league teams finished in the top 10 to advance to the National Championship. USC, ranked No. 2 in the nation, captured the regional championship with an 862 (-2), the only team to wrap up the three rounds below par. Oregon took second place with an even-par 864 while Clemson, from the ACC, was the only non-Pac-10 team in the top six, posting an 867 (+3) for third place. Washington (874, +10) and fourth-ranked UCLA (876, +12) rounded out the top five in the event. Stanford (878, +14) took sixth place, followed by St. Mary's (884, +20) and Arizona State (885, +21).

For the Golden Bears, senior Brandon Beck and junior George Gandranata paced the team in the overall standings, as both finished tied for 63rd place at 227 (+11). Freshman Stephen Hale had an impressive finish to the event; after shooting an 82 in the first round, the rookie rebounded to shoot 73-74 in the final two rounds, finishing at 229 (+13), tied with sophomore Evan Derian. Another freshman, Eric Mina, rounded out the scoring for the Golden Bears with a 230 (+14).

Hale was plus-five after eight holes on Saturday, but settled down and connected on four birdies over the final 10 holes to lead the Golden Bears for the second day in a row.
