Frederick Takes Second on Pac-10 Day One
May 16, 2008
TEMPE, Ariz. - Senior Norris Frederick placed second in the long jump and the Huskies had several top preliminary showings on the track this evening on day one of the Pac-10 Track and Field Championships at Sun Angel Stadium. The meet, hosted by Arizona State, concludes Sunday morning with champions crowned in 14 events.
Washington's men's team sits eighth after day one with 14 points. Oregon leads the team standings with 61.5 points. The Husky women are tied for seventh with seven points. Arizona State, the defending Pac-10 and NCAA champs, lead the women's standings with 84.
Frederick repeated his runner-up finish from last year, once again finishing behind ASU's Matt Turner, who went 25-8 ¾ on his second jump. Frederick, the 2006 champion, closed the gap with a third jump mark of 25-4, his best outdoors this season, but could not overcome Turner with his final attempts. Still, it was eight points for the Roosevelt High grad and Frederick will be a favorite again in tomorrow's high jump.
Fellow local senior Carl Moe from Auburn, Wash. ran a lifetime-best 8:47.93 in the 3000m steeplechase to finish fourth, earning five points. Moe was just a couple seconds behind winner Kyle Alcorn of Arizona State, who crossed in 8:43.81.
Boase won the first heat of the 400-meter dash comfortably in 46.26 seconds. His time placed him second overall heading into Sunday's final, just barely behind USC's Lionel Larry, the defending champ, who won the second heat in 46.24. Also moving on to the final is sophomore Jeff Gudaitis, who broke 47-seconds for the first time in his career, placing seventh in 46.82.
Later in the evening, the Huskies got a surprisingly strong performance from junior Joseph Turner in the 200-meter dash. Turner, a transfer from Modesto Junior College, led all competitors in the prelims with a season-best time of 21.06. The mark was also an NCAA Regional qualifier, and ranks as the eighth-fastest in Husky history.
The performance of the day on the women's side came from sophomore Katie Follett, who placed first in the 1500-meter preliminaries in 4:26.68. She will be gunning for her first conference crown on Sunday, and will be joined in the final by senior Amanda Miller, who ran the sixth-best prelim time of 4:28.78, and sophomore Kailey Campbell, who finished 10th in 4:29.53. Senior Amy Lia, the 2006 1500m NCAA Champion, missed out on the final, placing 13th in what was perhaps her last race as a Husky. After coming back from numerous injuries for her senior season, Lia never quite regained her national champion form.
Additional Husky women moving on include senior Michelle Turner who finished fourth in the 800-meter prelim in 2:07.99, and junior Falesha Ankton who set a personal-best in the 400m hurdles at 59.72, good for a fourth-place finish. The Huskies also got a new Regional qualifying mark from Mo Huber in the women's steeplechase, as she finished 11th in 10:49.34.
The Huskies each had a male and female freshman make strong impressions at their first Pac-10 meet. Freshman Kyle Nielsen threw the javelin 210-10 to place eighth and notch one point for the team, while freshman Elisa Bryant just missed scoring in the hammer throw, as she finished ninth with a best mark of 175-0.
